We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Foy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsey, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe the most important factor behind the success of my business is my ability to be personable with my clients and to be able to make adjustments based on the needs of the client while at the same time keeping in mind the artistic integrity of the design. Another important factor for myself has been having a formal school background in art. Many of the principles, design styles, and processes cross over and translate into the way I tattoo.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art started within the realm of photography, which I still love. I have a Bachelor of a Fine Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado and concentrated in this area while also taking on studio classes such as painting and drawing.
My interest in detailed botanical photography, painting, and drawing all have bled over into tattooing. The culmination of this comes in the ability to make detailed illustrative tattoos as well as tattoos with color blending as is used in painting. My preference in subject matter tends to fall within the botanical category more often than not.
As far as lessons learned, I would say that being able to slow down when working and allowing myself to be picky about the work I take on helps to keep quality high and a more stylistically cohesive portfolio. At times I will do walk-ins, but I have noticed that if too many of these happen, some of the interest level I have can dwindle.
I have also noticed that while being able to work in many different styles and imagery, having a particular style is appreciated by clients looking for something specific.
I have gotten to where I am today with a lot of trial and error along with imitating artists I admire and observing others. Building a client base has also been very important, and keeping relationships going helps with having people come back multiple times.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My partner Emmett Cookson, who also has his own private business in climbing coaching has been a consistent source of encouragement and an example of perseverance and goal setting. This has given me a lift of confidence in myself as a person and in my artistic abilities.
Another group I attribute my career success to is the team at Claw and Talon Tattoo. Being given the opportunity to learn and having a shop family that has high level of care for each other has greatly impacted the way I am able to work. I’ve been lucky to have a lot of support through the past six years of my career both professionally and personally.
Again, I would like to mention my time in art school as well as the community and variety of artists I’ve been surrounded by. This has contributed to my ability to cross mediums and view many different types of work as well as have others to bounce ideas off of and learn from.
