We had the good fortune of connecting with Maggi Mayfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maggi, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
There is a stage for everyone! It may take some longer than others to find their audience, but everyone has an audience if you stick with your art/trade long enough, keep practicing, and being kind…you will find a way to make a living making people happy with your creative endevour.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a musical comedian. I play guitar and piano on stage while I tell jokes! I am so proud of the original songs I’ve written and the accompanying music videos I’ve directed and produced. These are the perfect balance of everything I love, writing songs, telling jokes and working on a film set.
My journey has certainly not been easy. I’ve often let my personal life get in the way of my professional endeavors. Overcoming my challenges has been a lot of internal work, learning my worth and getting out of my own way to ask for what I want!
What I want people to know about me and my brand/story is that no one deserves to feel less than anyone else. I hope my music and stories help unite us and help us see each other as humans!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d go hiking!!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would never have started stand up comedy without the encouragement of the owners of CU Comedy in Champaign, IL. I was working on the radio and worked with Jesse Tuttle many times to help him promote and market his shows to audiences in Central Illinois. I was already writing comedy bits for the radio and performing with a local improv troupe. His sometimes not so gentle nudges was just the tough love I needed to get up on stage and try.
My mentor when I moved to Los Angeles was my coworker Mark Wallengren from KOST 103.5. A voice actor and national celebrity in the industry, he encouraged me to forge my own path to help make my dreams come true.
Mary Kennedy, actress and instructor was also fundamental in helping me write more, think clearer and gave me so many tips about how to navigate the world of standup comedy (and Hollywood) as a woman.
