We had the good fortune of connecting with Mandie Doom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mandie, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The biggest thing I have learned in my tattooing career is meeting people where they are in life and appreciating each individual as the unique human being they are. You can learn something from everyone and tattooing has deepened my love for humanity.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My absolute favorite thing to do is full color realism horror portrait tattoos. I use my own techniques that I have developed over 12 years of painting, drawing and tattooing. Art is a fundamental core of my lifestyle and working that in to my every day life has been key to teaching myself textures and colors on paper or canvas before applying those abstract techniques to skin. The step of art on skin has been a slow process of trust from clients/collectors that I will be forever grateful for and has always included honesty and communication. My love of horror portraits stems from my childhood where I was a lonely outcast with access to almost every horror film and cult classic from the 80’s and early 90’s. The textures and colors are seemingly endless and excite my artistic mind. There is something so intoxicating about creating a portrait and capturing that character or person’s essence.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One place I love taking out of state friends is The Rabbit Hole in Colorado Springs. It is my favorite restaurant here with a great atmosphere and amazing food. I am a bit of a foodie so we would also probably be going to Cork and Cask, Cerberus Brewing, and The Odyssey Gastro Pub. I am a clothing fanatic as well so if I were to have a goth friend in town I would take them to Legrande Accents Boutique in Manitou Springs, The Arbitrarium in Colorado Springs and Fashion Nation in Denver. If they are interested in oddities and curiosities I take them to The Last Rites Art and Oddities. Dancing is always a must as well so goth nights at Fritzy’s in Colorado Springs, Milk and The Church in Denver.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve always looked up to Carrie Ann Baade. She is a phenomenal artist and one of the best human beings I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
