We had the good fortune of connecting with Marie Yarrington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marie, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The short answer is how a beautiful mix of a dream and life circumstances happened to come together at the perfect timing.
The long answer, began when I was a teenager seeking my own therapist. I’ve always been a pretty intuitive person. I could tell when someone was genuine in wanting to help me and when they weren’t. I decided as a teenager I wanted to be a therapist and knew I wanted every person who stepped into my office to feel seen and heard in a genuine and authentic manner. It was a pipe dream to start my own practice, knowing that it took risk, time and effort that I didn’t know when I would be willing to jump into.
That jump came extremely fast when I had my twin, medical miracle daughters, in August of 2023. My girls were given the cards stacked against them while they were still growing inside. From there, they fought earth side in the NICU. After spending 99 days watching my girls fight in the NICU and feeling so alone, I realized how badly I wanted a therapist who “got it”. When looking for a therapist who specialized in Perinatal Mental Health, there were very few in our area specializing in postpartum PTSD, anxiety, and NICU experience.
When one of my daughters continued to have medical needs that extended outside the NICU, I needed the flexibility to care for her and her appointments. I quit the job I had at the time to care for my girls and in turn, decided I would start my own practice, specializing in Perinatal Mental Health, as a therapist who “got it”.
My goal is for those struggling with Perinatal Mental Health concerns to feel what I had always said I wanted to provide, a space for individuals feel seen and heard in a genuine and authentic manner. I am so honored to walk with many amazing individuals now who have faced so many experiences in the Perinatal Mental Health realm and I couldn’t be more delighted.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart is true, real-life, lived experience. I’m a therapist who has been to therapy, is currently in therapy and will hopefully always be in and out of therapy as life hurdles come up.
I’m a true believer that it’s really hard to walk someone through “the work” unless you’ve done the work yourself. Unfortunately, that also has left me with Imposter Syndrome in the past and questioning whether I’m truly helpful to those I get the honor of working with. Over time (and again, my own therapy!), I realized from the feedback from others and talking with those around me, that my own experience is actually what allows me to show up in the manner I have always wanted- genuine and authentic.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is the most loaded question when you live in a state such as Colorado!
Obviously, a trip to the mountains is a must. Emerald Lake and Sky Pond in Estes are beautiful! Depending on how much hiking they like, we could add a 14er to the mix! A show at Red Rocks is always worth it. And as for local eating and drinking, we love New Terrain Brewery and Tap and Dough Pizza.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The amount of support I received from my friends and family throughout this period is UNMATCHED. And while they (hopefully) all know who they are, I would be remiss without shouting out Children’s Hospital Colorado’s NICU nurses.
Out time in the NICU was a rollercoaster, as are all NICU stays. The nurses in the NICU were some of my husband and I’s biggest supporters. While our friends and family were ever supportive, our NICU nurses were the ones who stood by us day in and day out. They watched us fight for our babies and they advocated for us when we felt we had no one. We entrusted them with our babies when we went home to sleep and would answer every late night, sometimes tearful, call. They saw our lowest of lows and our highest of highs. They supported us like absolutely none other. We will FOREVER be grateful for Children’s Hospital Colorado’s NICU nurses. (Shoutout Gabby, Laura, Emily and Kristy in particular!)
