We had the good fortune of connecting with Marilyn Cowley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marilyn, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I associate risk-taking with stepping out of your comfort zone. You can’t grow if you are comfortable. Taking risks has been the way I grew my business. Whether it was walking into a business to introduce myself, reaching out to a LinkedIn connection, or attending an event, each action was a risk I was taking in the hopes to grow my business. I believe there is no reward, without risk. If you think about your life, everything essentially has to do with you taking a risk on something in the hopes you will be rewarded. The people that are not afraid to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves are the people that have the opportunity to continually grow and better themselves. It is amazing how much your life can change in a positive way by actively taking risks.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
PREM is a boutique marketing firm, meaning we only take on clients we believe would be a good fit for us. We work with many different types of businesses, from the nation’s largest final expense insurance firm to a customized van company, and we are well-versed in a range of industries. While the world is saturated with marketing firms, what separates us? Our personal aspect coupled with the value we bring to the table. We give our clients the attention they deserve and they can trust us to be an extension of their team.
What excites us is being creative and showing our clients results with that creativity. We have worked with celebrities, earned clients’ spots on TV shows, developed killer marketing campaigns, and shown the power of social media for businesses, among many other things. Our craziest project this year? Hiring a real lion and baboon for a commercial. Why? Because we believe if you don’t make something memorable, then what is the point of doing it!
I started PREM by walking into businesses, introducing myself and the services I offer, and the rest is history. Growing a business has been no easy task and there have been many lessons learned throughout the years. I certainly wish there was a guide on how to grow a marketing firm but I’ve had to teach myself what to do and what not to do. The biggest challenge has been learning how to not take things personally and most importantly, understanding that clients are just people too. Once you start believing this, your work-life balance starts to actually balance out and you can handle the many curveballs owning a business throws at you.
Take risks, do great work, and be a good person. The success happens from there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My PREM team. The most important part of building a business is having a great team. My team continually pushes me to be the best boss I can be and makes sure we are always staying true to our mission. Each person on the team plays a key role in the company and our success lies in the value each one of them brings to the team. Without them, there would be no PREM.
