We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Brockman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mark, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
As a young child I spent most of my life in my own head, this lead me to drawing and since comics were of great interest to me that’s what I drew. My goal as a teen was to be a comic book / fantasy artist, but a seed was planted in me by my high school art teacher to go a different direction. At some point in the art class, I think my teacher grew tired of my drawings of superheroes and barbarians, he set in front of me a piece of drift wood and said, ‘Draw this”. I did, and it opened up my mind to the fact that real life can be a subject for art. I still live mostly in my own head and my art, my paintings and drawings are a way for me to express myself and share my expressions with those who are willing to look.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Art is never easy, it is full of struggle and doubt, it is ever changing, ever growing. My art has changed over the fifty years I have pursued it, and I finally feel I have reached where I want and need to be artistically. One only gets to where they are through perseverance, and I have learned that success is not measured only by financial gain but also from personal growth and how one’s life, or art, touches others. I have participated in numerous art shows of all kinds and have won many awards for my paintings. I have also shown in a number of galleries on the east coast where I am originally from. But what is most important is that I have, despite the frustrations and struggles, been able and willing to continue painting, in fact to paint is too breath. At present I do not show in any galleries but continue to submit to juried shows, plus I show my work through Facebook and Instagram. I am excited at this point in my career as my paintings all of which is influenced by nature, the landscape, is taking me in a direction I have long looked for where I can truly and honestly express myself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As my art centers around nature, the landscape, I would take friends to the many great parks and mountain towns here in Colorado. As to eating I would when possible cook the meals myself as I enjoy cooking, but since visiting the parks and mountain towns take time we would explore those places to eat, and if we are lucky there will be live music. I feel though the best things to see here in Colorado are it’s natural wonders.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I will dedicate this to my beautiful wife Kathy who has encouraged and stood by me for nearly fifty years, and to my children, they have all had to deal with my dedication to my art
