We had the good fortune of connecting with Marla Schulte and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marla, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote is Psalm 46:10, “He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.'” I always need the reminder to “be still.” I don’t need to strive more or try harder. There’s already Someone in control and it’s not me. In verse 5 of the same chapter it says, “God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.” Not only do those verses guide and encourage me in daily life, I also apply the same vision to home design. Our homes are not there to impress – to be better than. We don’t have to constantly strive for perfection. Our homes are a place to find contentment – a place to be still. We want our homes to reflect who we are and who we want to be comfortable in them. Using what’s true to you and focusing on your contentment is how I design a home that’s not perfect, but perfect-for-you.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Decorating and home design is my second career. I was hesitant to get started because what I wanted to offer was so unique. I don’t focus on kitchen re-dos and large construction projects. I love to help with the small projects that can make such a HUGE difference. You don’t need to wait to spend thousands of dollars on your house to make it your home. Oftentimes small, meaningful and purposeful changes are all you need to really find joyful contentment at home. I’m so grateful for friends and family who encouraged me to get started and for clients who have been such a pleasure to work with and can testify to the value of making your home perfect-for-you even if it’s not the world’s idea of perfect!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s so fun to live in the north Denver area! When I get free time with friends, I love to go up to Lafayette. The Lafayette Collectibles & Flea Market is such a fun place to explore. And now Due South and Vintrey Honest Goods are right there too for great shopping. The Post Brewing Company has great food and so does the Acreage by Stem Ciders. I also love to go to Louisville – so many great places to eat like The Huckleberry, /por/ Wine House, Sweet Cow and The Melting Pot. And in Boulder, I used to love to take friends, family and my kids to the Boulder Dinner Theatre. I hope they get to reopen soon!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shoutout to Hannah Henry from Dragonfly Floral Company. Her support, partnership and friendship are so valuable to me! Owning your own business is not easy so walking through it with others is essential. Hannah always has time to encourage and give advice. And partnering with her for local shows and projects is one of my favorite things that brings such joy!
