We had the good fortune of connecting with Marley Bloodrose and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marley, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process was pretty much “dont fuck this up” haha! I really didn’t want to let my supporters and followers down for my first launch. I was really hard on myself in the beginning because I really didn’t know what I was doing as far as “business” and just the limited resources I had. I was still living at my parents house and still was a freelance makeup artist. I just started my beauty influencer career and just felt very new to the process. I did believe in myself though and I think thats why Im still standing here till this day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing im very proud of when it comes to my business is that I can honestly say I am true artist. Everything I do for glam Goth is inspired by my life or one of my passions one way or another. My life experiences are the main inspirations for my products and designs so when I finally wrap on a project its like I’m seeing myself or a version of myself. Nothing in my life has ever been easy. Im the first born daughter of African Immigrants and I grew up in the slummy part of the suburbs in Northern Virginia. In my early childhood went to a christian private school where I was the only black girl and got abused and bullied by my teachers and peers. By the time I go to high school I always knew I wanted a career in the arts but never saw any representation of me literally anywhere that wasn’t Rap Music. I spent a lot of time alone in my room where I would listen to my favorite bands like Paramore and The Cure and just ready fashion magazines and Shakespeare. Even though I guess you could say I was a social butterfly I was very lonely and felt misunderstood which led to alcoholism and substance abuse from high school to my early twenties. It wasn’t until I started by brand and had a purpose bigger than myself that I really started to be grateful for my life and wanted to truly have a successful career. The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is that how you start is how you finish. If you start a project filled with passion and stay organized and committed it will reflect at the end of the end of the project. If i need to rest or take a few days to myself and unplug I will absolutely do that but under no circumstance will I quit.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is dedicated to my fans and customers. Without them I would be nothing. They are always pushing me to be the best me I can be and yet also telling me its okay to take breaks and rest because they will support me no matter what. Thats so rare to have I feel like in this industry. Also Alicia Rau of Bete Noire is always in support of my creative ideas no matter how big or small. Because of her I can now call myself a fashion designer because she manufactures my clothing for Glam Goth and for that I am forever grateful!
