Meet Marley Wall | Co-Founder of Coven Collective

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marley Wall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marley, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We wanted to start Coven Collective as a way to shine light on the talented femmes in our music community. Coven Collective’s mission is to engage, support, connect, build, network, communicate, and hone our craft. It is a community of like-minded badasses skilled in the art of sound, with a principle of inclusion and collaboration; knowing that coming from a place of abundance begets more abundance!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started DJing in the middle of the pandemic in 2020 and never anticipated that it would change my life so much. Music has always been a huge part of my life, from grades 6-12th I played French Horn in concert band, I’ve always had an extensive library of music spanning across all genres, and in my Sophomore year of college I developed a deep love of electronic music and raves. For me this discovery of dance music and festivals came with a newfound sense of freedom to be myself. In retrospect I think this exploration of electronic music helped me along my path in becoming my most authentic self. Flash forward to 2020, with the help of my roommate at the time I picked up DJing quite easily and spent hours upon hours practicing mixing at home and organizing all my favorite music onto my USB. Over the next couple years, I started putting on a renegade, campout festival called Sympatico that connects music and nature and allows people to fully express themselves as creatives and artists. At the same time, I had started to play in clubs and venues under my DJ moniker MARS. Very early on in my DJ career I knew my sound was a bit different from most people in the Denver scene. I loved breakbeat, electro, juke, ghettotech, UK garage, and various other eclectic sounding productions – all of which I didn’t hear much of in Denver at the time. I think this was probably one of my biggest challenges as a DJ, I knew what I liked and what I had the most fun mixing, but I was worried about being true to myself and still being successful. Because DJing for me has always been about having fun and expressing myself, I chose authenticity time and time again over doing what everyone else was doing. I think in the long run this choice to be authentic no matter what has benefitted me a lot. People come out to see MARS because they know I will keep them on their toes with wild journeys through genres and tracks they probably haven’t heard before. Being confident in who I am as an artist was also enabled by the foundation of Coven Collective. To have a community of like-minded women who want to support, uplift, inspire, and elevate one another is truly a gift. Our community is there for one another in facing the challenges that come along with being a female in the music industry. It is also a blessing to be able to organize shows, workshops, and other mindful spaces with other women. The events put on by Coven have a focus of safety, expression, creativity, love, and kindness. I am so grateful for this journey through and by music I have taken since 2020 and I am excited to see what the future has in store for us.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite thing about Denver is definitely the people and dance floors. I would make sure to check out a few events at my favorite clubs and venues including, Stay Tuned, INTIMÄT Basement, 1134 Broadway, Kulture Music Hall, and Milk Bar. In Denver a few of my favorite collectives that always throw amazing parties are, Maybe Forever, Static Proof, Resonant Wellness, INTIMÄT, Sorted, and Quite Right amongst others.
In terms of day-time activities, I would recommend simply walking around the beautiful Cap Hill neighborhood, checking out various vintage shops and record stores, going to Meow Wolf, lounging around at Cheeseman Park with a view of the mountains, taking a day trip to hike in one of the nearby mountain towns, grabbing a matcha at a cute cafe in the city, checking out the Santa Fe Arts District, or taking a walk around Sloan’s Lake.
If you’re interested in drinks or food some of my favorite places include Hudson Hill, La Diabla, Little Ginko Asian Cafe, Angelo’s Tavern, or one of the many yummy taco trucks situated about the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Coven Collective wouldn’t be possible without our other two co-founders, Tiffany Bendelow and Maddie Rubin, the hard work of our incredibly talented residents, as well as the ongoing support of our loving community. We can’t thank our community enough for all the ways they have shown up to support us as individuals and as a collective over the past couple years. We can’t wait to build on our current momentum and continue to highlight and elevate female talent in the Denver music scene.
