We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Havens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Well, the social impact of Core-azón Designs is mostly a cultural, spiritual one. We’re committed to U.N.I.T.Y. across peoples and as part of that, we are unapologetically pro-Black/ Queer / Woman / Indigenous / Liberation & Freedom…. ALL that and then some. Through our shirts (and future parties), we hope to connect and uplift people through positivity, music and dance.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My background is in education, and more specifically in social justice and DEI education. I’ve spent over 15 years as an educator, so launching Core-azón Designs (CD) was something totally new and completely out of my comfort zone. As a freelance equity & diversity strategist and coach, I do a lot of work educating about systemic oppression and the brutality that exists. While that work is really meaningful and necessary, it doesn’t always feel my creative bucket or allow me to dream. Core-azón Designs gives me that space to focus on creating, imagining, building, dancing, dreaming…

This past year has been a hard one. We had some great spurts of energy, but we’ve also had some complete lulls as we tried to figure out how to thrive during a pandemic with not much money to spend on advertising or additional help. I can’t say I’ve figured out all the answers just yet, but we’re still holding on and riding the wave to see what’s next. We’d love to throw some parties because CD was always meant to be more than a t-shirt company- we imagined it as a whole vibe. We’ll see what the future holds. Check us out- we’d love to have you as part of the CD family!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hmmm….well… I’d have them acclimate to the altitude first and drink a sh!t-ton of water, lol. 🙂 Some fave food spots in Denver include Angelos, City O, Root Down… and of course Thin Man is one of the best bars in Denver in my humble opinion. I also love walking or biking along the river and checking out the art. Heading out of the city, would definitely take friends hiking or to some hot springs.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well, Core-azón Designs would never have gotten off the ground without the help of my friends and family. They bought my products when no one else even knew of us, they showed up when I needed help and cheer-leaded me on when I was in the dumps. Launching right before a pandemic meant that this year was definitely a learning year. We haven’t even gotten in our groove yet or perfected our designs or been able to host a party. And yet, I’ve had a steady crew of support since day one who believed in the vision before we were cool or made it big. When we make it big, best believe I won’t forget such loyalty. Love yous!
