We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Steiner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My pilates certification is Peak Pilates. It is a classical pilates certification. Classical follows the teaching of Joseph Pilates. Each level of certification required passing on teaching skills, personal execution of exercises, queing, anatomy and history of Pilates. The final certification required a 6 week case study. 16 continuing education credits are required to keep a certification current.

When clients come to me I teach to the body. It is not just a weekend online certification. I am able to teach all populations. I taught my mother who had parkinsons from when she could get on the floor for mat class all the way till she was bed ridden. She loved her pilates.
I love helping people get stronger and see their strengths.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My pilates studio does not take a cookie cutter approach. I work with the client and design a routine that fits their needs. I teach all levels. I am certificed in all levels. I have taught beginners, plus size clients, athletes(football, volleyball, golfer and baseball players) and advanced clients. I work with clients with replacements knee, hip and shoulder. Special populations including Neurodegenerative diseases include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, multiple system atrophy, tauopathies, and prion diseases. This is the benefit of teaching to the body. They workout to their ideal. I also work with prenatal and postnatal moms, proud to say I am up to 6 Pilates babies!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a beautiful, quaint western slope town of Cederadge, 1 stop light. The town logo is Gateway to the Grand Mesa National Forest. It is at the base of the Grand Mesa, the largest flat top mountain in the world. When we have friends visiting we have multiple spots to take them to explore. Depending on the time of year, summer we would take them hiking on the Grand Mesa, fly fishing, mountain biking and paddle boarding. Then stop at the lodge for a beer or something to eat. In town there is the Grand Mesa Arts Center where every Friday night there is a free concert outside with food trucks and drinks. Resturants, Sips Wine Bar, Snow Cap Cider, Sugar Mommas, Connies and Erics Pizza. There are multiple wineries in the surface creek area to visit, Stoney Mesa, Mesa Winds and Chill Switch just to name a few. All 3 have won awards for their wines.

Winter, we are 30 minutes away from Powerhorn ski resort some of the funniest downhill skiing. If down hill is not your thing we have some of the finiest groomed cross country ski and snowshoe trails. There is also a famous dog sledding competion in January. Some of the quaint lodges, Mesa Moon being a favorite and Cederede Lodge along with many Airbnbs.
There is so much to do!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I came to Pilates after I had a hip replacement in my early 40’s due to hip dysplasia. I was a runner and could no longer run after my hip replacement. I was walking through a gym and noticed a studio with these machines with chains and springs. As I stood there wondering what they were used for, one of the instructors came out and invited me in. She helped me rehab my hip and encouraged me to get certified. She then became my mentor and years later we opened a studio together in Fort Collins. Her name is Karyn Steenstra York she owns Phoneix Rising Pilates studio.

I would also like to acknowled my husband who always encouraged me to puruse a pilates certification and cheered me along when I wanted to open my studio.
