We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Land and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We get one shot at this thing called life. If you’re living your day to day clocking in and out at your 9-5, going through the motions to pay your bills, and live for the weekend you’re simply doing a disservice to yourself. There’s way more to life than that. The reality is that we can go at any time, and if that were to happen you’re going to want to look back on your life with a sense of fulfillment with no regrets so you can simply rest in peace. If that’s not the case for every second of every day you need to make change. Immediately. Do what you love!!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At this point what I’m working on feels bigger than I am, and I’m inspired and thankful for every day to be able to provide opportunity for good people, and tell stories that truly make an impact.
The journey to your goals is never easy, and if it doesn’t scare you it isn’t big enough.
The biggest learning I can think of that helped me push through the challenges and really grow to the next level was self discovery. Before I really pulled the trigger and made moves I took significant time to really discover who I am and what I’m trying to do. I came to terms with my weaknesses and strengths and outlined my role as best as I could. From there I understood that you can’t do this alone. The number one thing in business is people and your team. I made it a very clear point to have this as the highest priority, and to put those people in the space that they love the most, and just let them run with it and it worked.
Transparently like I said above it’s not about me at this point, but it is about the simple key solution of following the driver of “Do What You Love”. That is literally the motto and tagline of our company, and we’re learning that if you actually do that it will solve all of the problems in every area of your life. You just have to be truly honest with yourself and come to terms with and know who you are and you’ll make it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Outdoors man no question!! Gonna load up the van and book a campsite on the coast!
Wake up, coffee and breakfast at camp – then wave check. If it looks good we’re going surfing, and if not we’re going fishing. Either way both are happening and we will be cooking fish over an open fire at camp with salt on our skin.
We’ll get our fix of pure outdoors for at least 3 days, then we’ll head into the city and hit a couple local restaurants and breweries.
Good times only lesgo!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Good one! I’m going to have to go with a classic and say my mother Lori Townsend. It’s a little different with us though as what we’ve been through in our journey together clearly falls into the category of not being normal. Transparently she’s the real story here.
As unbiased as I can possibly say her journey is an inspiration. From day one she grew up in a challenging household, and focused her efforts to get out and do what she loved. She became a horse trainer which is amazing, but poverty level income. From there she became a single mother and really struggled financially. She then was able to get into college and achieved an associates degree in computer programming. Now over the years she worked her way up in the corporate world to a top tier level making six figure income, however she realized she wasn’t happy. Now fast forward she’s grabbed onto that realization of Do What You Love and now owns a gym and is beginning her full transition into entrepreneurship.
Above all of that learning and growth in the middle of this journey she remarried, and unfortunately became a widow. Looking back at what is typically labeled as a fully negative event, we realized that we were gifted the greatest developmental learning experience you can possibly have in life.
With all of that being said, I was right there experiencing her journey and struggles since I was a child, and learned that you can truly accomplish anything and live any life you want. It’s all about mindset and how you approach it. You can truly find light in the darkest of places.
