We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt North and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Running a business is an exciting and rewarding endeavor, but at times it is also challenging and stressful. As an entrepreneur, it is essential to know when to keep pushing forward and when to call it quits. The lure of working for someone else, especially during challenging times, can be enticing and sometimes, it may even make more sense in the short term. Without a crystal ball though, knowing when to persist is difficult and it is a situation that I have found myself in many times. Over the years there are a few key questions and strategies to use when I have found myself at a potential crossroad.

First, it is important to assess the current state of the business. Is it profitable? Is it growing? Are customers satisfied? Are there any significant market changes or trends that could impact the business’s future? If the business is doing well, it may be worth continuing to invest time and resources into it. However, if the business is struggling, it may be time to reevaluate the business model or consider other options.

Second, evaluate personal motivation and passion for the business. Starting a business requires a significant amount of time, effort, and dedication. If the business is not fulfilling personal goals and aspirations, it may be challenging to continue. In contrast, if the business aligns with personal values and goals, it may be worth continuing to pursue. In the end, does it make you happy and is there the potential for you to afford the life and lifestyle that you want.

Third, assess the feasibility of continuing the business. Consider the financial and emotional costs of continuing to run the business. Are there any other opportunities that could provide a better return on investment or greater personal satisfaction? It is important to weigh the costs and benefits of continuing the business against other options.

When we are in the weeds of running the day to day operations, sometimes it is hard to have clear perspective as to how the current state of the business is impacting us. It’s even harder when you have so much invested in the business. Giving up can feel like a personal failure and be a blow to our ego’s. While I myself am certainly vulnerable to these feelings, I have also learned over the years, that you can make the best product in the world and do everything right, but if the market is not supportive and sales do not come through, there is nothing you can do. It’s important therefore to seek advice and feedback from others. Talk to trusted advisors, mentors, and colleagues who can provide objective perspectives and insights. They may be able to provide guidance and recommendations that can help determine whether to keep going or give up on the business. Just because a business is not financially successful does not mean it is a failure, conversely, even if a business is financially successful, the stress or challenges in keeping it in operation might not make personal sense.

Deciding whether to keep going or give up on running a business requires a careful assessment of the current state of the business, personal motivation and passion, feasibility, and acceptance of market powers. While it can be a difficult decision, it is essential to consider all factors before making a final decision and realize that regardless of the conclusion there are many valuable take aways and opportunities ahead.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Here in Boulder there is no shortage of good places to eat and stunning vistas to hike to. One of my recent favorites for lunch or dinner is AOI sushi, a small and cozy spot in Boulder that serves some of the best sushi in town. After grabbing food a place that I hold near and dear is Eldorado Canyon. A state park that is like no other in Colorado or the west, a truly stunning area with unapparelled nature and solitude for those who are willing to hike.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my wife Allison. You have been a strong and passionate supporter of mine while always giving me direct and clear feedback. It’s rare to find a partner in life but even rarer to find one who supports your dreams through all the chaos, stress, and uncertainty of running your own business.
