We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Price and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I loved my previous career and the company I worked for, but I felt there was more I could do to impact people on a personal level. I kept having an internal feeling in my gut that I had the ability to assist people with getting unstuck and going after what they said they wanted. When this feeling started, I was hit by a truck in the middle of rural Colorado when the temperature was minus 24 degrees. This accident woke me up to what I really wanted, and that was to challenge leaders to increase their desire for personal development and take more risks to get unstuck. I ask my clients “When were the happiest moments in your life?” They always reference really hard things that took a lot of work. Things like opening a successful business, graduating college, winning a championship or performing in a musical. I realized during my previous career I stopped taking risks for fear I would fail. What would my co-workers think of me if I failed? What would happen to my reputation? I learned I was holding back and I set out on a personal development journey to discover who I am, what I am about and now I assist others with that experience.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our firm helps leaders who are stuck. It’s not what we do, but that is who we are. We walk the journey with our clients as they confront obstacles and challenge themselves to find opportunities in the difficulties. We are different because we can consult on high level business needs such as hiring, recruiting, marketing and time management and we can help our clients drill down to the root causes that are holding them back. We offer tools, like you would find in y0ur toolbox, and teach clients when to leverage the appropriate tool for the appropriate challenge. For example, we rely on the Strengths Finder as a development tool and we use the assessment to determine where a client’s true genius is. Then we work with clients to leverage those strengths as often as possible. The most exciting thing we see is when somebody commits to getting out of their comfort zone, takes a risk and produces results that they never thought were possible. This may be in business or in their personal life. The best part of our process is that the results are all because of the client’s commitment. When fear arises in the body we train our clients to understand that feeling, notice what is holding them back and then take action to overcome fear. Action cures fear.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man, in Grand Junction this is a challenge because there is so much to check out. In the warmer months it would be to mountain bike Lunch Loops trails or head out to Fruita to hit the 19 Road trails. The trails are a blast, offer challenges and the views are world class. I would then take them to Hot Tomato Pizza in Fruita, then head to Copper Club Brewery to enjoy their favorite beverage. For some down time in the afternoon we would go to Colterris Winery in Palisade to check out the rock cliff vistas. A trip to Grand Junction is never complete either without taking a drive through the National Monument-it’s like a mini Grand Canyon in our backyard.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my journey working for State Farm Insurance. Their employee development programs are industry leading and the company attracts the highest caliber of people.
