We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew and Melanie Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew and Melanie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We started Sunroom Brewing as a way to take back ownership of our time, energy, and stress. After decades in the software industry, we recognized that working for other organizations left us constantly drained and unfulfilled. Working for ourselves certainly takes a significant amount of time and energy, however, the effort and the outcome are our own and ultimately work to meet our own goals for our family and for ourselves. Pursuing creative and community-oriented work was a welcome change. It’s been abundantly rewarding to see the energy we put into creating our recipes and brewing our beers pay off amongst our patrons. We’ve enjoyed getting to know our neighbors, and seeing community members return time and again to enjoy our craft and our space. This work is what matters to us, and these memories are ones we can be proud of for years to come.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We both have professional backgrounds in software. Matt was a software engineer for over 2 decades, and Melanie works in product management. We grew our careers as many in our generation did – with myriad sacrifices along the way, and little reward. Brewery ownership is a welcome change from that environment, in that it gives us the opportunity to control our futures and focus on the things that mean the most to us, namely family. It was incredibly challenging to make the leap, and we continue to learn about how to maintain balance. However, we’re confident that working for ourselves in this creative space, in the long run, will be rewarding.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our Shoutout recognizes the Craft industry in Colorado as a whole. I don’t think this story is told often enough, but there’s an incredible amount of support, mentorship, and resources available to brewers in this state. For an industry that could be focused on competition, the atmosphere here is one of support, encouragement, and collaboration. Our Brewers’ Guild and the folks who run it are invaluable. The brewers and brewery owners we’ve connected with along this journey have been willing mentors. And the opportunity to participate in so many local festivals, is unmatched across the country. I’m not certain that brewery patrons would otherwise be aware of this incredible network, but it truly is what makes Colorado breweries successful. We can work together, to create and enjoy this Craft, and that’s what it’s all about.
