We had the good fortune of connecting with Mecha Swain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mecha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always been a person that prefer to march to the beat of my own drum. Making my own schedule is important to me and I wanted to do what I love to do. Years ago, I noticed there was a void in comedy, and I wanted to do something about it. I then created SlapStik Comedy Magazine, then I decided to create my own network and add-in SlapStik Comedy Radio and TV. I love to create, and I love humor, which is why I chose to focus on comedy. The funny thing is, when I started my business, it was a hobby and very fun to me. I had a blast networking with individuals involved in the comedy industry then, my business started to grow. SlapStik was kind of an accident. I didn’t expect for it to turn into a real business where I would have a studio.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have a production company called Mecha Media and I created a brand called SlapStik Comedy Entertainment, which is a platform that showcases comedians through SlapStik Comedy Magazine, Radio, and TV. I’m excited that I’ve been going at it for so long, I opened my first studio in January 2022, and it wasn’t easy. A lot of people didn’t understand what I wanted to accomplish with SlapStik and told me that my business would not be successful. I overcame challenges by being different and trying new things. I took a lot of risks and not one accident do I regret. I took a break from SlapStik in 2012 because I was a single mother, and I needed to focus on my sons. I told everyone that once my sons graduate from high school, I would get back to business. I restarted SlapStik in 2020 during Covid because everyone needed, “A Good Laugh to the Abs!”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The funny thing is most people want to go to comedy clubs to hang out. I will go, but it always ends up being work for me, even if I plan to go, hang out, and have fun. I enjoy being in direct contact with comedians. We keep in touch even on the days we are off. If I have the choice to choose where to hang out, we will end up in an intimate spot where we can people watch, drink Appletini’s, eat good food and be in exciting company. I love to laugh. My favorite place is my couch. I work so much that when I get to chill, I do. In my view, one of my favorite places is Antalya, Turkey. I wish I could take everyone there. The place is rejuvenating for me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to shoutout all comedians that believe in SlapStik Comedy. I appreciate when comedians show up and I love when they are on time. It lets me know they respect my business, my vision, and support the work that I create. I have much respect for Dave Stroupe at the Columbus, Ohio Funnybone Comedy Club, He allowed the SlapStik Team to use the Funnybone stage to record interviews with comedians, he gave us tickets to the shows, and anything I requested; he always found ways to accommodate what I wanted to accomplish. Another person I credit is Kevin Hart. Back in the day, I traveled and get to spend lots of time backstage with Kevin and the Plastic Cup Boyz. I learned a lot. The networking with other comedians was tremendous to my business.
