We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Morales and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anthony, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the most important factor about the success of Old Soul Era is authenticity and having absolutely no expectations. In an overly saturated industry, it’s easy to get lost in the void. The beginning and end goal was never to be successful simply just to be. My music is my therapy and very much a personal experience. I feel that this in turn with having fun has led to a selective group of followers with like minded outlooks. Being myself, always.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Old Soul Era sprouted from a seed planted very early in my life. My relatives all played in bands and I grew up going to their shows regularly. My first instrument was the saxophone which I played in grade school then later found my way to the guitar. The sounds that really shaped what would later become OSE ranged from punk rock, indie, jazz and soul. I was around 14 when I began writing poems and songs. I didn’t start producing music until my senior year in film class using garage band. After high school a friend introduced me to Ableton and that was when I really dove into beatmaking. My main weapon of choice at that time was the MPC1000. I sampled anything and everything that touched my soul. The entire time I was creating the blue print for OSE without thought. My intentions were never to play my music live but simply just creating to create. When the opportunity to play live came up I took it and fell in love with performing then and there. I think what sets my art apart from the sea of artist is both the narrative of the message being told and the ability to be my most truest self through my music. One of the best compliments after rockin’ the stage is having someone pull me aside to tell me that they really see me, and felt something almost musically spiritual in my performance. To me, that is such a personal and beautiful experience to share with those who come to watch and listen.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anywhere with music. One of the best things about Denver is how many places you can go and listen to live jams. Some of my favorites include The Marquis, Mutiny Cafe, Goosetown Tavern, Cervs and of coarse Red Rocks.
If you were stuck taking a stroll around town with me for a day we’d probably start with a morning hike up in Evergreen and then hit up Jelly U Cafe for some sausage biscuits and gravy. Afterwards, we would slide through wax trax records to dig for some samples. You’d find me in the international jazz section. Next I would drag you along to the Lakewood Cultural Center where I teach youth hip hop and make you dance battle my students. My students would school you. Then we would hit up my favorite watering hole The Tabletop Tap to wet our whistles and nerd out on some Super Nintendo. I’d beat you on NBA Jam. To top the night off, we’d head over to Mutiny Cafe to dig for some comics and join in on a cypher with the homies hosting. Shout out DJ Konz, FaceDefeat and SmallboiFunk.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The listeners. The people who take the time to listen to the music, the message and the love. It is their support that has opened up doors and opportunities for me and I am forever grateful to all of them.
I’m also grateful to my family. They inspire me to be a better human every single day and I would be lost without their love and support.
