We had the good fortune of connecting with Meg Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meg, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea for The Better Band while writing one of my original songs, “B-Side”. I knew that this song was a hit and had the potential to be a fantastic rock song, but I could only play it as an acoustic singer/songwriter. I started to think about how all of the songs I write technically fall under acoustic Singer/Songwriter because I’m just a girl with a guitar, but they all have a different genre that is truer to their story. I wanted to build a band that was timeless and genre-crossing to tell those stories, so I came up with the idea for The Better Band. The Better Band plays the “better” versions of those Meg Walker original songs as well as your favorite cover songs. We play every genre from rock to funk to indie-pop and folk so that there is something for music lovers of every genre at each show.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been writing songs since I was 13 years old and over the last 10 years, I have written over 300 songs. Each song is a piece of me and tells a story from a time in my life, both good and bad, and they all feel like my musical children. Music has gotten me through the most difficult times in my life and has served as a triumphant anthem during the brighter times. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be living my dream as a working musician, embracing my passion for songwriting and performing on a daily basis.
I have always written as a singer/songwriter and performed in that genre, just a girl with her guitar, and I am so excited to finally tell each story in a different genre. Collaborating with The Better Band, a group of seven talented musicians, we embarked on this ambitious journey to reinterpret my songs in diverse genres. When I thought of the idea, I knew that it would be hard to execute and after several months of trial and error, we can finally share these songs as they were intended to be heard. Our hope is to create a space where our audience and listeners can forge their own connections and live their own experiences through our music.
It took a long time to get where I am professionally. I’ve had numerous jobs, lived in several apartments, and navigated life-altering changes, even moving across the country to pursue music. No way would I have known 6 years ago that I would move to Colorado all the way from North Carolina to follow my dreams, but I did it and it was worth every second. There have been so many challenges along the way but I have always had my family and my music. I have found in life that I don’t need much else.
What I’d like people to know about the brand and my story is that chasing your dreams and following your passions will never be easy, but it will always be rewarding. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to making music; if it feels good to you and feeds your soul, then chances are you’re doing something right. In the case of The Better Band, we believe in playing our music in as many different ways as it takes to move people and get them on their feet!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever people come to visit, I make it a tradition to take them to Voodoo Donuts or Snooze for a tasty welcome to the city. From there, I take them to Union Station via a city scooter and cruise through the city for a sighting of beautiful architecture and delicious burgers and shakes at Hopdoddy Burgers. The next place we would go is the Denver Aquarium to get the feel of the ocean in the mountains. On the way, we would travel by 16th Street Mall and cherry creek trail. We would then end the day with the newly reopened Casa Bonita for good eats and cliff divers. Of course, we would also squeeze in trips to eat at the original Chipotle, go to Washington Park, and eat at Little Man Ice Cream.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The first people that come to mind are the 6 extremely talented musicians in The Better Band. I am eternally grateful to Brett Regan, Talia Eaton, Michael Amodeo, Haley Milonas, Tyler Hamlin, and Ali Oldright for making my music come to life. I am so lucky to have met these wonderful people and have the opportunity to be in a band with them. They are the hardest working people I know, practicing every week and playing shows every month with precision, creativity, and dedication that I could never have imagined when I first had the idea for the band. I owe all of my success and all of my thanks to them.
