Meet Megan Brown | Pup Caretaker & Greeting Card Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk-taking is crucial to starting (and continuing to run) your own business. You’re constantly faced with decisions that require you to take a leap if you want to grow. I don’t think it gets easier over time to take risks in my business. Sorry, future entrepreneurs…it definitely can be scary! But that’s when I lean on friends and fellow small business owners for support and advice. I’ll also add that sometimes you just have to make the decision on your own and go with your gut.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Trot & Squat was inspired by our late dog, Charlie. He had some aggression issues with other dogs, so we could never board him. Instead, we had to rely on friends without dogs (slim pickings!) or family. Our options were limited. I realized many dog owners out there also have limited caretaking options. Trot & Squat focuses on premium, one-on-one pup care. We focus primarily on overnight sitting and “day dates.” Since we only book one dog at a time, all our focus is on your pupper.
I want to say starting this business and getting clients wasn’t easy, but if I’m being honest, it was. I owe that success to the dog owners out there who were looking for this style of pup care! I think they were waiting for something like T&S to come along, and I’m humbled by the success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d definitely take them up to a mountain town for a few days for snowboarding or skiing, especially during spring. Back in Denver, we’d likely make it all about food and beverages. Some of my favorite spots are all over the place ambience-wise: Safta, Grandma’s House, Sputnik, Steuben’s, Maven Hotel, PS Lounge, Bluebird for a show. I could go on and on!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This is a tough question because there are so many choices! But I’d have to give my shoutout to the very first person that popped into my head, one of my besties, Elysia Myers. Elysia is always my number one cheerleader with any crazy endeavor I try to get my hands on. I could tell her I’m going to start building 787 airplanes in my backyard and she’d likely recommend a steel supplier she once heard of.
