We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Morris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always dreamed of owning a retail store. I have been a jeweler for the past 18 yrs and have always wanted to do something to use my creativity. I I have always had people ask me to create a custom piece of jewelry for them or teach them how to make their own piece. I thought that was such a great idea for a business! I bring different artists together to sell their handcrafted items. My local artists then come in and teach classes on their art medium. My goal is to make art accessible to everyone!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been a jeweler for about 18yrs. I mainly work in PMC and both make items sold in Meraki Springs as well as teach classes at the shop. I love the fact that all of the art classes taught at my shop are beginner level. It gives a place for our community to come in and experience different art mediums in a non-intimidating environment. All skill levels can try their hand at being creative in many different ways. I want Meraki Springs to continue to grow as a warm and welcoming place for our community to come together and shop, be creative, learn a new skill or just hang out, have a glass of wine and spend time with others.
It has not always been an easy road to get to where Meraki Springs is today. I have learned how to pivot my vision and ideas as needed. It is so important to be flexible as a small business owner and be willing to admit when something isn’t working and be open to trying something new. I have also learned to be firm in standing my ground. That is not something that comes naturally for me. I have learned the hard way (a few times during this process) that it is absolutely essential to set boundaries and stand firm on how I want my business to be run.
One thing that I have done since opening the shop is journaling. Since day one, I have kept a journal of the process of running the shop. It has been so helpful to be able to look back and remind myself what I have gone through. It is inspiring when I feel like I’m stuck in a rut or having an off day. I can read back over all of the obstacles and see how far I’ve really come.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever I have friends visit the area, I bring them to Old Colorado City! We have so many great shops and restaurants. It is a cozy little section of Colorado Springs that still gives you that small town feel. After strolling around OCC, I take them to Garden of the Gods for the picturesque views. I love that our Pike’s Peak Cog Railway is back in order! Going to the top of Pikes Peak is something that I always recommend to anyone visiting.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Starting up this business has been a labor of love. A lot of hard work has gone into it as well as a lot of support from my family. My husband and two children have been extremely helpful with helping out with whatever is needed at the shop. My sister has also been an invaluable resource in finding artists and helping run the website. The shop is also made possible by having great artists who not only make wonderful products but also are willing to teach classes to our community.
