We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Page and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Bark Boards stemmed from a couple things starting with the love for my dogs and wanting to provide them with a few extra treats every once in a while. The other being the fact that charcuterie boards are such a hit for people, why not take that and make it work for dogs too. Combining the two allowed me to create some elevated and cute treats for my dogs that they enjoyed eating and I enjoyed making.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What started as wanting to spoil my dogs with just a couple treats here and there eventually turned into a constant state of wanting to have our dogs try all the treats. When I bake, I know exactly what ingredients are going into these treats, but there are some things I just can’t make myself and don’t have the time for. I do currently work a 9-5 on top of getting this business up and running myself. So I began to research companies that use all natural and minimal ingredients, foods that are good for them and that they enjoy, not just the cute cookies I love to give them. I started adding things like dried fish to their diets which is great for their coats and is full of Omega-3 and Beef Tracheas which are full of protein and great for their teeth. Those treats along with others then turned into small plates, Charcuterie Boards, which for the dogs obviously became, Barkuterie Boards.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is actually great because my best friend of 15 years and her husband just moved to Colorado from New Jersey about 4 months ago. Besides the typical spots in the Springs like Garden of the Gods or the incline we opted to do St Marys Glacier as one of their first big hikes. This summer my top places to bring them are Great Sand Dunes National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Moab UT. That area is truly beautiful and I do recommend it to everyone that visits. For food some recent favorites have been COATI, The Principals Office (Ivywild Kitchen has some of the best chicken tenders I have ever had), and Zocalo which is a new taco place that opened up downtown. The best thing about being in the Springs is that there is ALWAYS a new place to eat or a new place to go explore, it’s a city filled with so much to do and share with the people you love.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think this business began when my one dog, Apollo, was diagnosed with lymphoma. I was looking for an extra way to spoil him, which now has turned into me wanting to spoil everyone’s dogs, because they all deserve it. I would love to give a shoutout to Southern Colorado Veterinary Internal Medicine where Apollo ended up doing chemo at, they saved his life and gave us some extra time to spoil our boy with all these treats. He is now one of our lead treat testers at Bark Boards and this March will be two years since he completed his chemo treatments.
