We had the good fortune of connecting with Meighan Kapke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meighan, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for my business wasn’t a sudden and determined decision to create a business one day. It was more of a gradual progression of realizing that I needed an outlet for my creativity outside of my “day job” of being a graphic designer. I craved the ability to design and create something that brought me joy and allowed me to use color (and cats.)
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The hardest part about becoming an artist for me was developing my style and message. It took me about two years just to figure out my personal style and even now I’m still growing and developing my style. I hope I look back in a year from now and I cringe a little seeing how I used to do things, knowing that I’ve grown.
One internal challenge that I face often is the desire to do too many things at once. In my craft, there are so many options and things that I can make and create, and it can easily become very overwhelming. So I’ve learned to slow it down a bit. I write down all the things I could and want to do, and then I tackle them one at a time based on how excited I am about that thing or how successful I think something will be in that time period.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would try to get them out into the mountains! There are so many beautiful spots that are near the city. I would pack subs from a sub shop that would be nearby for a picnic – Snarfs or Colonel Mustard’s Sandwich Emporium is a favorite in CO Springs. Then in the evening after a day in nature I would take them either to Spice Trace Brewing for delicious food and brews or if I wanted to go somewhere fancier, we would treat ourselves to Safta in RINO. There are so many good markets around that I would try to find one to go to.
And honestly with kiddos, we spend a lot of time at the Childrens Museum!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout 100% has to go to my husband, Jordan. When I’m away at a market all day or having to be glued to the computer in the evenings he is so supportive and fathers our kids so wonderfully.
