We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melanie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
At the beginning of this year, I received some disappointing news that I would need IVF to have kids. My husband and I have had a long six-year journey with unexplained infertility and was finally given information after many tests that IVF was the only solution. Being familiar with fertility treatments, I knew I needed to add another source of income to take on this financial responsibility. Within three months, I started my business as a Pinterest manager and now work with creatives and small business owners helping them connect and covert their perfect person to drives sales to their business. I genuinely love that I can help small businesses grow by working with a creative platform but also being able to serve myself and my family’s goals. It’s a perfect combination.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At school, I studied Communication Disorders and got a job right out of college in the speech and language department at a charter school. While I loved teaching and helping, I wasn’t thrilled to go into work every day. After a couple of years, I eventually shifted focus to teach English to Chinese students online while working at home. Immediately I fell in love with the remote lifestyle and could still fulfill my need to help others through teaching. I still teach today and know that my new business as a Pinterest marker is doing well because I know how to teach and communicate with my clients effectively and compassionately. In the beginning, I was nervous to promote myself this new business I created and didn’t feel confident in my skills, but the more I practiced, the more comfortable I became and felt less like an imposter. Now speaking to other business owners is one of my strengths as I do not doubt that my skills and knowledge are valuable to those who want to grow their business. To anyone who wants to start something, practice makes permanent. Allow yourself to be a “C” student because, over time, your mess will become your message.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The wonderful thing about Colorado is that you can enjoy a lot of different activities without having to drive far. If my friend were visiting, I would take her to see a concert at the Red Rock Amphitheater, explore the Rocky Mountains and hike to Devils Head Lookout. We would definitely explore Larimer Square and check out the local markets and eateries, as well as enjoy a Colorado Rockies baseball game or a Colorado Avalanche hockey game. These games are fun to go to regardless of who you’re rooting for.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I told my husband that I wanted to start my own business, he was nothing but supportive and encouraging. He understood my “why” because he wanted it just as much. We both knew this would be the solution that brought us one step closer to our ultimate goal- a family. Through this whole process, he has been a great listener when I voice my frustrations, progress, and wins. I am lucky to have him as a husband, friend, and supporter.
