We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Garman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, why did you pursue a creative career?
My Mother and Father started the business in the early 70s. My father had been creating original clay sculptures in Central and South America for a few years and continued with his original clay pieces in Dallas Texas for a few years after returning from his travels. He missed each one of his characters that he sold so he began to find ways to reproduce his work, he believed that art should be affordable for the every day man, They moved to Colorado and started Michael Garman Productions.

My father began creating “street scenes” to give his characters a home. The street scenes eventually evolved into the full city block attraction “Magic Town” here in Old Colorado City. Throughout the years magic town has been updated and continue to evolve throughout his lifetime. Incorporates mirrored illusions and holographic like images throughout the sculptural cityscape.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My father often spoke about creating characters and small dramas that are the heart of America and the people that live in it. Not the standard sculptures of famous people, but of the common man and of the blue collar heroes. He put in a lot of hard work and always worked from his heart. He didn’t do a lot of listening to other people and what they thought he should do. He really just did it his way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely let them experience Michael Garman’s Magic Town. I would bring them through Manitou and the penny arcade, the Garden of the gods, the top of pikes Peak, walk the lake at the Broadmoor,

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My father loved John Steinbeck
