Hi Miriam Jeannette, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
In my professional career, I’ve encountered many talented individuals with immense potential to become successful business owners. Unfortunately, due to a lack of guidance and information, these individuals often remain employees, using their natural talents and skills to enrich their employers’ businesses, while missing out on the opportunity to build something of their own.

On the other hand, I’ve also noticed that many business owners, especially Hispanics, have been paying hefty penalties to the government or facing high-interest charges from insurance companies. This is often due to a lack of knowledge, information, and advice available in their own language.

In my professional career, I’ve consistently demonstrated talent and skills in creating solutions and innovations that have led to success for other businesses. I had the privilege of creating, designing, and improving various administrative, accounting, and operational procedures for corporations and small businesses alike. This made me wonder: if I could help other companies achieve national success, why couldn’t I start my own business? And beyond that, why not help those who lack the guidance to start or maintain a successful business? So, in 2017, I took the big step of founding my own company: MJ Better Books Inc.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At MJ Better Books Inc., we offer a wide range of services including accounting, payroll, tax preparation, business registration, tax planning, and business consulting. We currently serve clients in more than 21 states remotely, tailoring our services to meet each client’s unique needs. Our mission is to provide peace of mind through excellent accounting and tax services, coupled with financial education to help our clients achieve their business goals.

We specialize in helping entrepreneurs and workers who have the drive, potential, and ambition not only to establish but also to grow and succeed as business owners. We ensure that their sacrifices are worthwhile because success knows no borders.

We also have a registered trademark: #ytutambienpuedes. The phrase ‘y tú también puedes,’ which translates to ‘and you too can’ in English, conveys a powerful message of empowerment and inclusivity. I created this because it signifies that success is attainable for everyone, regardless of background, nationality, or circumstances. This aligns perfectly with our brand’s mission to inspire immigrants and entrepreneurs to realize their potential and pursue their dreams.

This motto is also linked to my YouTube channel, which I started in 2020, where I provide valuable content for startups, new entrepreneurs, and business owners. We’re on the verge of reaching 100k subscribers, and to celebrate, we’ve launched a new podcast: CafeTaxO. This podcast will feature interviews, inspiring stories, and collaborations with professionals from various business fields, offering valuable insights for entrepreneurs. Additionally, I have a TikTok account with 114k followers, where I frequently go live to offer advice and answer as many audience questions as possible.

Throughout my journey, I’ve learned several key lessons:

Resilience: Facing setbacks and challenges is inevitable, but learning to bounce back and adapt is crucial.
Continuous Learning: Staying updated with industry trends, technological advancements, and evolving customer needs is essential for remaining competitive.
Persistence: Success often comes from persevering through tough times and staying committed to your goals.
I firmly believe that success knows no borders. My journey began with a simple yet profound idea: every immigrant, regardless of their origins, has the potential to build a thriving business in the United States. As immigrants ourselves, we faced the challenges of navigating a new culture, language barriers, and the complexities of starting a business from scratch. But with resilience, determination, and a passion for helping others, we turned these challenges into opportunities.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting the area, I would take them to First Watch for breakfast, followed by a beautiful hike in the mountains.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My late mother was one of the most hardworking women I ever knew. She wasn’t just hardworking; she was creative, entrepreneurial, fun, generous, self-sufficient, incredibly beautiful, and my greatest adviser. Her love and support pushed me to be better, and she deserves so much recognition for that.
