We had the good fortune of connecting with Myra Rahmani and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Myra, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned is that it is not all sunshine and daisies. There will be setbacks, failures, heartbreaks, and disappointments, and those lows are what truly test your character. I remember how crushed I felt every time my post went unnoticed, my new collection did not shine, or people rejected my product. But we can’t let these ‘delays’ stop us. We have to bounce back and bounce back with greater conviction and sharper insight. You need to treat every failure like an opportunity to become better, and that will happen not by repeating the same steps, but by evolving. It is this point in a career that separates quitters from fighters. And the fighters go on to achieve their dreams. So, I hope I am on the right path.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Though I am a writer, owning and running my own business was always a dream. I love taking on challenges. Folklore is my second venture; my first was tied to my true passion, writing. I ran an online content development company.
When COVID came, like almost everyone, I changed as a person. I wanted to explore things that made me happy. Though I loved my business and it was doing well, content development was not how I wanted to pursue writing. So, I bid farewell to it. I took some time for myself: I painted, caught up on my reading list, and worked on my next business idea. Only this time, I chose something that made me feel empowered, jewelry.
I know it may sound superficial to some, but the right pair of earrings makes me feel confident when I’m doubting myself, and the right bracelet helps me feel in control when things aren’t going right. These are small things, but they help you dress for success. That was the vision behind Folklore: to put together a collection that helps women feel more empowered, more beautiful, and more feminine. I hope my jewelry helps them step into any role they wish to take on.
Folklore is not old enough, and building it has not been easy. It brought me out of my comfort zone, I faced the fear of failure, and struggled with self-doubt. But along the way, I celebrated every little success and stayed true to myself. I’m still building, still learning. It’s all about tenacity and resilience. I’ve learned that the hardest part is staying motivated and optimistic in the face of disappointment. But we have to keep going, we must.
As I give my best to Folklore, I haven’t forgotten my childhood dream of becoming an author. I’m currently working on my first book. It’s fantasy fiction. The genre isn’t mainstream in Pakistan, but I hope to contribute to it in whatever way I can.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A city that lies in the foothills of the Himalayas has a lot to offer. I could write a whole essay on this. But let’s keep it short.
First, a hiking trip through some of the most scenic trails in the city. The adventure would be so tiring that the next day would have to be nothing but relaxing—and what better way to do that than by grabbing the town’s best coffee at Tealeaf & Coffee Bean?
Next up: a trip to the bookstore, Saeed Book Bank. Established in 1955, it’s one of the landmarks of Islamabad and a beautiful place for book lovers. I’d also sneak them into the bookshop opposite Saeed Book Bank. Though not as big, it has that charming rom-com vibe. Then there are activities like go-karting, fishing, and boating at the city’s largest lake.
Then, a full day would have to be dedicated to mall visits before I’d take them a little higher into the mountains to Pir Sohawa, for traditional snacks and a walk through nature. They can enjoy a stunning aerial view of the entire city from up there.
Of course, a visit to the most exquisite and largest mosque in Pakistan, the Faisal Mosque, is a must. It’s an experience every traveler should have.
For the art and history buffs, there’s Lok Virsa, the Pakistan Monument, and several museums to explore.
As for food, the city is full of restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. You can find some of the best sushi, BBQ, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Italian, and Mexican here. And not to forget the burger joints. And I’m not talking about international fast-food franchises. Some local spots are far superior, serving the juiciest, most flavorful burgers you’ll ever try.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people, really. My mother who bought the first pair of earrings from my shop. My dad, who thinks his kids are superhumans. My siblings and nieces, who liked and shared my posts when no one else did, lol.
But my special shoutout goes to my son. He is only ten, but he pushes me to be better every day, through his actions and the way he faces every little challenge. Even though I’m the mom, I’ve learned a lot from him. His tenacity, persistence, and commitment have been great motivators. You can’t tell him to quit, and whenever someone does, he proves them wrong through hard work and results.
And of course, my husband. He has shown me that we do ourselves a great disservice when we consider ourselves too ‘knowledgeable’ to learn new things. That’s why he supports every new venture, every new project I undertake. He encouraged me when I painted, supported me when I started my business, and now, as I write my first book, he reminds me every day that I’ll make it.
I’m also blessed to have two amazing friends who have always shown me love and support on this never-ending journey of self-discovery.
