We had the good fortune of connecting with Naeemah Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Naeemah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’m from the south side of Chicago, I enjoy doing hair, makeup, traveling, and being an awesome entrepreneur. What made me decide to start a business? Over the course of time, I naturally learned how to take care of my hair with the help of my grandmother who so happened to have a beauty salon in her basement. I learned early how to pay attention to hair, it allowed me to grow my hair healthy and strong. My sister Enyonah was the daring one and would cut all her hair off and start over, me on the other hand, appreciated my length and growth over time. I decided to move to Colorado back in 2016 and my hair and skin had a whole fit. I didn’t realize high altitude and dry air would have such an impact on me. I first ran to shelves and used all the latest products but nothing kept my face from breaking out or my hair moisturized ti have less breakage. I decided to take it back to the basics and think about what my grandmother would do, did some research on ingredients, began using it on my hair and boom Amelia’s Hands was born. My sister Enyonah worked as a massage therapist so she understood muscle relaxation, facials, and aromatherapy and with some research, Amelia’s body was created.

Amelia’s Hands & Body’s mission is to provide our customers the best quality product at a reasonable price all while educating the community about hair and skin care. We continue to provide natural, organic, vegan-friendly products for women, men, and children.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career is in education. I was raised in an educational environment as a child so I naturally grew to love the idea of a child’s mind and development. I graduated from National-Louis University (with honors) and reviewed a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Instruction with Eglish as a Second Language minor. I’m currently a program director for a childcare facility. I have a passion for education and children. One of my long-term goals is to create a school that caters more to the child’s mind and development in a non-traditional setting.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow, that’s an interesting question, I’m still getting to know the wonderful things that Colorado has to offer. I’m a big Groupon friend so we would book an activity through the site. One of my favorite breakfast spots is Denver Biscuits so that is a must-visit. If a local concert or comedy show was going on that would definitely be on the agenda as well. I’m an outside person so we must take a trip to Lookout Mountain to see the amazing view and Redrocks for the walking trails.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give s shoutout to my family for supporting me along this journey and my partner Shanard Wilder for sticking by me and being the extra hand when needed.
