We had the good fortune of connecting with Njeri Akosua and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Njeri, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success right now is trying really really hard to work through the voice of self doubt. Every moment you give to believing you’re not worthy of what you want is a moment you could be moving toward getting what you want. Sometimes I forget that but when I remember I make way cooler stuff and way more money.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make mostly clothes and some jewelry, and I would say that I’m known best for my unique dyeing process. I love taking thrifted and vintage pieces and updating them through dyeing and sewing. I dye in layers, so I’ll dye a piece, and then maybe bleach it, and dye it again in those bleached areas. Each piece goes through several phases before being finished which is really fun to watch. Normally when I start a piece I don’t know what it will look like in the end, which also makes it so each is perfectly unique. Tie dye is definitely having a moment in fashion right now but I haven’t seen anything quite like what I make!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout Melanation (@melanation.e.info) for providing me with so many opportunities to share my work with my community in Denver. And also my family for always supporting me and never telling me there’s no money in art.
