Meet Pamela Murphy | Nature, Wildlife and Landscape Photographer- A Soul’s Journey Photography

We had the good fortune of connecting with Pamela Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pamela, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want my legacy to be one of kindness, strength, integrity and great care. I want to be remembered as a person who shared the beauty that exists in a sometimes cruel world. Someone who reminded people that nature is magical. A caregiver of the natural world and people too. I hope to leave an imprint on people through my photography, that it might bring joy and serenity to many. I want my children to remember that I didn’t give up on my dream. And even if I couldn’t make it a full time career, that I still did it because it fed my soul. I want my grandchildren to remember my teachings of nature and how I fostered a love and respect for it through adventures. I want to be remembered as a sharer of beautiful things.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey started in an attempt to feed my soul during a very difficult time in my life. I was caring for my dad with Alzheimer’s. I took my camera out to a wooded area near my parent’s home because something told me I needed to explore that area. That day which was a particularly horrible day for my dad, I found a Great Horned Owl who I later named Kismet. The experiences I had with this owl and his mate who quickly became my friends inspired me to dive deeper into photographing the beautiful things I was seeing while spending time in their woods. In time I started sharing my photos and the feedback I received was that I needed to go even farther. That I had an eye and great potential. This was coming from some great photographers who I very much admired. So I continued on my journey to feed my soul and learn as much as I could about photography. A Soul’s Journey Photography was born. I began to explore other wildlife, landscape and also astrophotography. I learned the basics of post processing and quickly found that I had a love of doing it. The more creative I could be the better. I got to a place where I found my style and my confidence grew. One of the things I am most proud of is that I took a leap and opened a booth at a marketplace to sell my work. It was a big risk as I had to spend my own money to set it up. I was pleasantly surprised when I sold quite a few pieces! Due to Covid I was unable to justify keeping it open unfortunately. I am currently looking into other options to sell my work. I have had some success with my Facebook page, but my dream is to have it physically displayed. It has been a challenge to get my name out there and create my brand, Many times I have wondered if I should continue, but patience is a virtue and I know my time will come. I am grateful that something that started as just a journey to survive my grief turned into a professional adventure that I continue to build on.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It is hard to choose one area! Colorado Springs is such an awesome city. I would have to say the West side of town where we could explore the amazing Garden of the Gods, Manitou, Old Colorado City, and Cheyenne Canyon area. With cameras of course! I would have to share the delicious breakfast at the Omelet Parlor, the Trading Post Café in Garden of the Gods would be on the list as well as Amanda’s Fonda Mexican restaurant in Manitou where we would eat on the patio next to the creek. The Cave of the Winds would be on the list for exploring as well as taking a ride on the Cog Railway. These are just a few examples, but there is so much to do!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I couldn’t have come this far in my photography without the support of my family! Always cheering me on and even when I wasn’t cheering for myself. Encouraging me to forge ahead and not give up. My oldest son for helping me to learn Photo Shop and going out on photography adventures with me, my youngest son for always supporting my efforts and making me smile through the hard times, my mom and sisters for sharing my work and praising it. But most of all my husband, who has sacrificed financially so that I could purchase equipment, take time off work, print my work in hopes to make profit & use a lot of gas going places etc. He provides unwavering support and has even begun to do some photography himself. He believes in me always and will not let me give up. Last but not least my dad who is no longer with us, but created my love of photography through his own. He always had his camera and he loved to edit photos in creative ways. Many times my greatest work comes from photos I take with thoughts of him. I also want to shout out to the few Facebook groups I am involved in. Places where I can freely share my work and gain more exposure. Especially Colorful Colorado Collective. It is an amazing group to see Colorado’s vast beauty and full of supportive like minded people who want to see each other succeed and share their photography masterpieces. And people who just want to see the beauty shared and support all the photographers efforts. I have met a few people who have become mentors to me and friends. Thank you to everyone who gives me so much love and support!
