We had the good fortune of connecting with R. R. Noall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi R. R., can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started From Whispers to Roars because I was DEEP in creative processes myself.

As a poet, I felt a little isolated, and knew other creatives felt the same way. Starting From Whispers to Roars, a literary magazine, helped me to connect with other writers and artists. I also meant I could help elevate their voices and amazing work.

The magazine also supports creative and other meaningful causes, which is important to me. During wildfire season, we typically donate of portion of our proceeds to fire prevention non-profits. For our last issue, published in March, we donated to an amazing poetry nonprofit out of Los Angeles. From Whispers to Roars allows me to truly give back in every way, and I’m so thankful for it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Starting From Whispers to Roars was a culmination of everything I love: art, connecting people, and starting businesses.

SO FEW creatives know how to market themselves, because unless it’s something you’re practiced in, it is a daunting skill set to try to obtain on your own. A part of what I try to focus on is simply talking about these hurdles more outrightly while offering a solution by working on and growing From Whispers to Roars.

The literary magazine acts to elevate creative voices. We publish issues tri-annually (if not more), release new artist resources on our blog weekly, and recently started featuring writer and artist profiles on our website.

From the marketing perspective, we have a large footprint, receiving thousands of website visits per month (and aggressively growing); this is a piece that most creatives aren’t thinking about, however, does “being published” mean as much if folks aren’t finding or reading your work? I have a marketing background and MBA, with a focus on SEO, and I love growing this creative space with the tactics I use in my professional career.

It’s always a hurdle to go up against the giants in the landscapes (the .EDUS and older poetry organizations), but From Whispers to Roars is right up there out-ranking many of them. It’s been a fun challenge for me both professionally and personally.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Genesee for a hike, and then we’d go to one of the more walkable parts of town, either RiNo, the Highlands, Sloan’s Lake, or Olde Town Arvada.

A few favorite spots around town to eat and drink:
-Cochino Taco has the best happy hour and amazing tacos
-Denver Beer Co. and New Image in Arvada for beers
-Dumpling Kitchen off of Pecos for dumplings!
-Hangout at Birch Road, a social club, to enjoy what’s stashed in our wine locker by a firepit!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Francesca deserves an enormous amount of recognition. She has unconditionally believed in me since the moment we met. As a creative person, so much can feel (and is) intangible for a time – even in those moments nothing about my passions has ever scared her. She’s an amazing person, and I am so so lucky I found her.
