We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachael Reid and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachael, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Ever since I was a young child I’ve loved creating art. From art classes in school, to private art lessons, to majoring in art in college, I’ve always loved taking photos and capturing the world around me. In college I had more opportunities to take photos for others and I realized how much I loved it! I enjoy getting to be creative while also getting to work with people. I get to share my creative vision with them and help them feel comfortable in front of the camera. I’ve studied photography extensively throughout high school and college and knew that I had the skills to produce quality work. I love being able to use my talents to capture special memories for people. Life can change in an instant and photos are a cherished tangible item that are passed down for generations. I know how special certain photos of my loved ones are to me and I love being able to create that for others. I photograph seniors, couples, weddings, and families and I get to walk through many of those stages of life with my clients. I feel honored to work with people time and time again and to know that my photos hang on the walls of their homes.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe in classic photos. Photos that you can pass down for generations. Like the special photo of your grandmother on her wedding day. Images that are timeless, which you can look back on and enjoy for years to come. I am very inspired by film photography, and you will see that emphasized throughout my work. I have been shooting and developing my own film for years. I love the nostalgia and the act of slowing down and truly treasuring each photo taken. I love being able to offer film photography to my clients as well. The look and feel of film adds to the concept of photos being special heirlooms of moments worth capturing. I also offer classic polaroid albums for my wedding couples as well!
When I take photos, I truly care about connecting with the person I’m capturing so that they feel comfortable and look like their best self in the images. I am proud of my portfolio and the number of images I’ve captured over the years.
I am excited about my new print shop! I am an avid traveler and find so much inspiration when I’m in new places. I love immersing myself in other cultures and am proud of my portfolio of travel photography. I have digital and film images in my collection. I have been building my print shop portfolio which I will be releasing very soon! I have a few big trips this year where I will be adding even more photos to the collection. I love the idea that others can decorate their spaces with these special images.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question! We have a few friends overseas and my husband and I often have this conversation. We would definitely visit Williamsburg. If they love history, we could explore Colonial Williamsburg, great for walking around too! We love getting pastries and the creative coffees from The Bake Shop. We would go to Amber Ox or Casa Pearl for dinner. At both places we love their hand-crafted cocktails! Amber Ox has really cool seasonal, farm to table food and Casa Pearl’s seafood is amazing.
We would visit Yorktown to walk along the waterfront or maybe even Virginia Beach oceanfront if they’d like a beach day.
We love visiting Norfolk. There are some amazing food spots like Handsome Biscuit (I love the Hella Fitzgerald), The Veil – we love their beer and their new rooftop bar Only You, and we would definitely go to Toast/Perro Blanco. We love their negronis, charcuterie boards, handmade pop tarts, and enjoying it with friends in their outdoor garden area.
Norfolk is fun for photo walks too! We’d shoot some film for sure.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In thinking about who I’d like to recognize, I immediately think of three areas. First is my family. My husband, especially since being together since high school, has grown with me and has truly encouraged me as an artist. From buying me my dream cameras to just being by my side in daily life, I cannot thank him enough for being my biggest supporter. My daughter is my newest love of my life and the reason I work hard each day.
Next are my art teachers. My high school photography teacher was one of my biggest role models and I learned so much while in her classroom. My love of film photography began here. My college professors, especially my art education professor and my film photography professor.
Last are my clients. I couldn’t do what I do without them. I am endlessly thankful that they choose me to capture their memories.
