Meet Rachel Harris | CPDT-KA, certified professional dog trainer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I started my business back in 2012, I knew that there were loads of dog guardians who loved their dogs but just didn’t understand how to get them to behave in certain ways. I had seen first hand how frustrated dogs and people both got from a lack of communication and I knew that starting my own dog training business would enable me to help people and dogs live more successful lives together. I wanted to be able to serve my clients without having to conform to how someone else wanted things done and I am so glad that I did. It’s been an amazing ride with A Good Feeling Dog Training.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I found my calling training people and their dogs after volunteering at the MaxFund as a dog walker. There, I saw that the thousands of dogs stuck in shelters are there because of easily trainable behavioral problems. I realized that if you take the time and work consistently with these disorderly dogs, they can learn to trust people, behave politely, and find the homes they deserve.
Over the last 12 years I’ve been privileged to work with families and dogs that have taught me about the power of the human/canine bond. I’ve cultivated a skill set of meeting families where they are at and customizing the training to their needs and lifestyle.
I work with all breeds and families, but have a soft spot in my heart for blockheaded bullies and pitbull mixes.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots are actually outside of the city. Evergreen is a great place to visit. You can get in a great hike and then picnic by evergreen lake!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My success really wouldn’t be possible without the love, support and encouragement of my husband. Running my own business has come with a lot of stresses and set backs but I can always count on him to give me the boost of encouragement that I need to keep going.
