We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel W. Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel W., what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
The habit that has most helped me succeed is tracking my daily activities. I created a document that I use to plan my short and long term goals and I use that to create daily checklists. I review the list every evening to see what I accomplished and to plan the next day.

This has been instrumental in two ways. It keeps me motivated when I see my accomplishments and it helps me stay realistic about what I can accomplish every day. For example, I may list seven things to do one day but only get four of them done. Instead of getting discouraged, I learn that, for certain size projects, I should only plan to do four of them. The list also helps me prioritize what is most urgent and what takes the most time. This ensures that I am always moving forward, even if the steps are smaller than I originally planned.

Tracking daily activities has been the best way to celebrate the small wins while working toward the big goals in a manageable way.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Ray of Justice is a law firm that represents crime victims and abuse survivors in Criminal Cases and in Family Law Cases. The firm is unique in three ways: (1) I emphasize open communication with clients; (2) take a holistic, trauma-informed approach to legal advocacy; (3) specialize in only serving crime victims and abuse survivors; and (4) I offer Flat Fee pricing that allows for transparency and accessible legal services for more people.

Two of the biggest complaints that people have about attorneys are the lack of communication and the lack of empathy in the legal representation. I encourage communication through an Instant Messaging System and regularly-scheduled meetings with clients. I employ trauma-informed advocacy while introducing my clients to holistic wellness modalities through monthly Healing Sessions that they can access at their convenience through their email and on YouTube.

My Victim Rights Advocacy is unique in that there are not many attorneys practicing in the area of Victim Rights Law. This is a new area of law that ensures crime victims certain rights during a criminal prosecution.

There are also not many attorneys who expressly only invite abuse survivors to be their clients. While everyone deserves competent and zealous legal counsel, I find that I am more motivated and avoid ethical/moral dilemmas when I represent survivors; the “good guy”, if you will.

Another complaint that many people have is that the costs of legal services are too high and too unpredictable. My Flat Fee structure promotes access and transparency because clients know their costs up front and they are able to access flexible payment options and financing to cover their fees. These payment options are not available with the unpredictable, black box of hourly billing. I also find that hourly billing poses an inherent moral hazard that I do not agree with. Specifically, attorneys risk unnecessary, inaccurate, and inflated billing practices that leave people traumatized and in financial peril. This is the opposite of what an attorney should want for their clients.

The process of finding my niche with survivors was quite organic. I was previously a prosecutor and am a survivor myself so it was a natural transition to work more closely with survivors when I branched out on my own.

The biggest challenge has been learning the inner workings of a business: operations; cashflow; marketing; planning. I imagine these are the same challenges for most new entrepreneurs. I am continuing to learn through programs like the RMMFI bootcamps and other educational courses offered by the Colorado Bar Association. And, of course, through trial and error.

What I want the world to know about The Ray of Justice is that I offer strong legal advocacy for survivors that is financially accessible while addressing client wellness as a whole.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting Colorado, I would take them first to soak in the hot springs of Manitou Springs. We would then walk through the Garden of the Gods, right outside of Colorado Springs. We would then head down to the Royal Gorge to take a train ride through that canyon and watch people zip line overhead. We would then spend a day in Denver on 16th Street Mall, taking the mall ride to Union Station where we would have dinner watching the trains come and go.

These are the best adventures I have done in Colorado with the mountains as a beautiful backdrop!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out Rocky Mountain MicroFinance Institute of Colorado (“RMMFI”)! I have participated in several of their bootcamps since my company’s inception; each bootcamp tailored to my level of growth. I learned how to incorporate my company; how to create a Business Plan; how to document my operations cycle; and how to create low-cost marketing on social media. RMMFI has also provided funding that sustained my company through an unexpected downturn. The lessons became helpful during that downturn because I was able to delegate company operations and maintain momentum until the emergency passed.

I am grateful for RMMFI’s support for me and other small local businesses.
