We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany E. Slater, PhD and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tiffany E., what role has risk played in your life or career?

I believe that taking calculated risks is necessary for growth. My willingness to take certain risks has definitely helped me to realize what is possible for me, both personally and professionally. Quitting my 6 figure job to start a business with no promise of success was a gamble I needed to take in order for me to find the joy I desired. I entered a PhD program, fully acknowledging that there was no guarantee that I would obtain better employment as a result. Every time we take a risk we learn more about ourselves and grow as a result of it.

It is also important to note that my faith plays a major role in my ability to take risks. For me, one does not exist without the other.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

HR TailorMade is THE human resource (HR) solution for small business owners. I started my company in 2018 in order to provide seamless HR services to smaller organizations and help entrepreneurs and business owners grow their teams while instituting an employee-centric approach capable of improving their staff member’s work experience and quality of life. As an HR Professional of over 20 years, I have seen firsthand how integral maintaining a proper work-life balance is to a healthy and happy lifestyle.

I started HR TailorMade because I believed it was the best outlet for me to be able and use my expertise and passion to help spread joy in the world; a way for me to assist business owners and employees alike in finding true purpose and satisfaction. In addition, I have learned that every business performs better when their employees are supported, and people grow more both outside and inside the workplace when their employer invests in them, and I wanted to pass that knowledge onto others.

I attribute the growth of HR TailorMade to the passion I have for creating joyful work experiences. The work we do for our clients not only supports their team, but it also helps the owner/founder to work in a more balanced and efficient way. At HR TailorMade, our mission is to essentially take the HR ball away from business owners and manage it for them. Through referrals and happy clients, we have been able to grow at a very steady pace.

I wouldn’t say it has been an easy road, but I will say that all of the hard work that goes into the services we provide for our clients has paid off exponentially. The hard part is making sure we continue to WOW the organizations we work with. So far, so good.

As a business owner myself, I have learned several lessons, the most important being 1) to “let your faith be bigger than your fear” and 2) that no one is an expert at everything and we all should therefore hire experts to help our companies do their best work. These two lessons have saved me a lot of time and frustration.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I live in the St. Louis, MO area. If a friend were visiting, we would:

– spend the day enjoying the St. Louis Arch grounds and touring the Arch
– spend the day at the St. Louis Zoo
– enjoy a leisurely walk through the Missouri History Museum
– take a stroll through the Delmar Loop and stop in Salt & Smoke BBQ for lunch
– take in a Jazz or Comedy show at HollyLou
– enjoy dinner at BrickTop’s in Frontenac
– we would, of course, enjoy a day at the ballpark watching the St. Louis Cardinals play
– our final destination before she left would be The Face and Body Spa for a full day of spa treatments

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many amazing people that have and continue to help me and my company succeed. To keep it simple, I will Shoutout my husband, Michael Slater, for supporting all my endeavors; my boys, MJ and Donovan for always reminding me to take care of myself and to stop working so many hours; my family (mom, dad, aunts, siblings, cousins, sister friends, etc.) for being my biggest cheerleaders; and to my mentors and coaches, Susan Conti, Victor McGuire, Makisha Boothe, Narmen Hunter, Alyce Herndon, Christy Maxfield, and Kevin Wilson, thank you for helping me bring my vision to life, and for supporting me and believing in me every step along the way.
