We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Szabo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always had a connection with needle and thread! I spent a lot of time with my Grandparents growing up and they were both amazingly talented and resourceful people. My Grampie would fix up discarded or broken furniture or decor to reuse it & my Gram would take my Aunt’s outgrown clothing and repurpose it for me & my dolls. I have always tried to reuse and repurpose items to create something beautiful and useful for as long as I can remember. My mother in law asked me to repurpose her wedding gown to create christening outfits and wedding bags for future grandchildren before she passed away. This request led to many others and my business has been thriving for over 30 years!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My first hand sewing project was at the age of 4! I have been surrounded by a family of creatives and repurposers where I learned many skills. I have always sought “steady” jobs that were somehow creative as I was nervous to be a “full time” artist. I have been a furniture refinisher, quilt shop owner, pieceworker, seamstress at an amusement park & a Director of a local arts center. I have always participated in local craft fairs and consigned my work with local boutiques and galleries. I created an Etsy shop a few years ago as I found a traditional website to time consuming to maintain and not relevant to the work I was creating. With the help of my young adult children, I also maintain a Facebook & Instagram presence. Both Etsy & social media were essential for the growth of my business during the pandemic as I was unable to participate in any in person events and several of my retail boutiques were closed. In May of 2022, with the encouragement of my husband, I left my current full time job to pursue my business “full time”. I am excited that Thats Sew Fabulous has been thriving beyond my wildest dreams! My boutique sales are doing well, my custom orders are steady & in person events have resumed!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have been blessed to be supported and inspired by my amazing family & friends! They help me at my events, source materials and good deals, share my social media posts and encourage me to never give up!
