We had the good fortune of connecting with Roger Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roger, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

In 2019 I was let go from the company that I had helped build over 10 years. I was faced with a new reality, which was, what do I do next? For me the realization that I had helped so many companies be successful and had nothing to show for it was very eye opening. I then started on a journey which helped me realize that no company really valued what I did for them. Once I realized that, starting my own business and making my own future was the next best step for me and my family.

I had to realize that going back to another organization where I would just be another employee didn’t make sense. I could go out on my own and write my own script. The world was my oyster and I could make of it what I wanted. I had worked hard for others that didn’t really appreciate me, but rather, they only liked what I could produce for them. Now I had the opportunity to reward myself for all my hard work and truly reap the benefits of owning my own company.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have been in sales for over 32 years. I started my sales career in the rent a car business. My next stage in the sales world was when I got a bread and cake route where I would sell to thrift stores. After that my wife and I started our first business together selling beanie babies and collectable toys. After that I got a job selling advertising for a dot com company where I sold advertising to fortune 500 companies. My next big step was moving my family across the country without having any family or friends in town, let alone the state. While I was trying to figure out a new town, I met two commercial real estate brokers and little did I know that a year later I would be working with them.

I started working for a small boutique commercial real estate firm and I was successful. In my first three years of being in the business, I closed 95 deals. It was during that third year that I was approached by a start-up healthcare real estate firm that specialized in only representing the dentist in their commercial real estate transaction. I took a leap of faith and started with the new firm and that is how I got into the healthcare commercial real estate world. Over the next five years I help grow the company by expanding into the veterinary and optometry side of the medical industry. Eventually getting into more of the medical side.

After my fifth year with the firm, I was promoted to Broker Development where I would end up training 100 new commercial real estate agents. I became the managing broker for the company in 13 states, basically, I opened up 13 different markets for the company, and managed 54 commercial agents under those licenses. By the time my term ended with this company I had helped the company grow from $1.4 million in revenue to over $12 million.

Despite that success, I learned during those last 5 years of being with the firm that I was working for a narcissist, and a compulsive lier that I could no longer trust. Once he found out, he fired me and that was the end of my term at that company.

The journey has been hard for me in the commercial real estate world, however, I have met a lot of great people. The lessons I learned along the way have been priceless. One lesson is to make sure you save as much money as you possibly can and live below your means. Listen to your gut, if something feels wrong, it usually means that there is something wrong. However, every experience in life is a lesson. A form of education you can say. I had a mentor that had a saying, “There are two types of education in this world. The type you pay for, and the type you are going to pay for.” That saying has always proven to be true.

It was from those experiences that gave me the know how and courage to launch Healthcare & Business Realty, commercial real estate for professionals. I now get to work with the same healthcare professionals as before, but now I have added other business professionals to the mix of clients. I get to work with everyone that needs a commercial broker to help them with their commercial real estate needs. It can be a new lease, a lease renewal, a relocation, a purchase of a commercial building, or the purchase of a parcel of land to build a building on. Anything commercial real estate related, I can provide a high level of expertise and negotiation skills to help them get the best deal possible.

What I would like the world to know about my brand and story is that if you work hard and put your clients first, you will always succeed in the business world. There a lot more good people that will see and appreciate the hard work you do for them and in turn, they will help you grow your business.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend coming into Colorado Springs one of the first places I would take them to is the Garden of the Gods. It is truly a beautiful part of this city. I would then take them on several hikes to see all the different parts of this city. To name a few, Monument on the mount Herman trail. The next day I would take them to the Spruce Mountain trail. Another activity would be to play golf on the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi, Patty Jewett Golf Course. I would take them to America the Beautiful Park and on the Cog Railroad up to Pikes Peak (Americas Mountain). I would take them to the Broadmoor hotel.

The restaurants would be MacKenzie’s Chop House, Denver Biscuit Co., Urban Egg, Snooze, Micci’s Pizza, and Torchy’s. If it was during the summer months, I would take them mountain biking on as many of the wonderful trails we have in town that they could ride.

This town has a lot of wonderful places to go to and visit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The people that helped me get to where I am today are my wife and children. I have been married to my wife Tammy for 28 years and we have four amazing children. All of them believed in me and truly encouraged me to take the leap.
