We had the good fortune of connecting with Sagan Petr Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sagan Petr, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Growing up, I was always surrounded by the world of creativity, whether that reflected in my Moms cooking, or in my Dad’s musicianship. My father has been playing the guitar since he was about 9 or 10 (around 1975-77 was when he really started playing), which would eventually lead him touring the country with his band “ALASKA”. He then studied at The Ohio State University for Sound Engineering. My mother on the other hand, has always been obsessed with cooking since she was a small child. She eventually would go to Culinary Academy in Pittsburgh, and would work in high end restaurants up until having her second child (My little sister).

So being around all of this love, creativity, good food, and gentleness inspired me and gave me the opportunity to really realize what u wanted to do with my life, and that thing, was the music. Everytime I would try and learn something new within the realm of production or songwriting, I felt like I was in the right place. And I still feel that to this day.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When you decide that you’re going to be a creative, you have to understand what that looks like. You can’t just decide one day that you’re gonna be a musician and expect that you will blow up off of your first track. That’s not how it works for the %99.9999 of us artists.
You have to understand that the only way to be an artist is to understand that of survival. You either are, or you are not. You live, or you die. There’s no in between. You are an artist, or you are not. There’s no in between.

So with that being said, I’ve put my entire life into my craft. I have etched my soul onto every beat, and into every piece of lyricism I write. That’s what it means to be on this path. We are fighting for our lives.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Okay the best night out in Fort Collins in my opinion is making sure you’re out and about during Bohemian Nights or Taste of Foco, because then you start to really feel the energy of the city just a lil bit. But man, whenever me and Jenna go out, we go to The Rio Grande Bar off of Mountain, grab 1 or 2 margaritas, hop on over to Slyce Pizza, which is on the same block, and get a slice of pizza, before we go and play pool at Trailhead or Matchups. I also love hitting up Pizza Casbah whenever I can, that’s always the spot for me.
I also love digging for vinyl, and I think the best record store in town is All Sales Vinyl. So many obscure records in that store it’s insane.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my Mother, my papa, my little sister, my best friends Milo, Dallas & Creighton Evans, my boy Siah, Josh & Joey, Aniston, the entire underground rap community here in Colorado.

But if we are being so real, the one who I think deserves a special shoutout, is the love of my life, Jenna Marklowitz.

She’s my creative spark. My creative & emotional cup of coffee. She truly understands me down to my atomic makeup. She saved me from the brink of no return, and without her and what she had done for me, I would not be sitting on my couch in my beautiful home with our two dogs telling you this. She truly is the answer to everything for me.

She drew the album covers for SPS (DISC 1 & 2), and plans to draw much more commissioned art in the future

God I love my people.
