We had the good fortune of connecting with Sage Goodwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sage, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been curious about creating, and I have one of those personalities where when I’m interested in something, I want to try to do the same thing. So when I started getting really into watching videos, I wanted to make my own, or when I got really into listening to podcasts, I researched as much as I could in how to make them. And ultimately, being able to do the things for myself and hone my skills, that led to others wanting me to create content for them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been in the video space for 13 years, it started when I was gifted a camera for Christmas and my brothers and myself would create fake commercials, and short videos just for fun. Later on, that turned into a YouTube channel, and when the 2006 iMac we had bought stopped working for video, I started a podcast with my brother on a video game series we loved as kids. All throughout that time, I developed my skills in videography, podcasting, and graphic design, all key pieces of what I would eventually do professionally.

I was working part time running a maker space, and helping kids with 3D printing, videography and graphic design. Meanwhile after work and on every off day, I was working on personal projects, and showing up to local events and getting my face out there. Living in rural, doing this combination of tech and creativity, and being younger than almost everyone I was interacting with was a struggle sometimes. But I kept showing up, kept learning, and kept developing. Eventually people took notice of the camera around my neck and saw the work I had done, and started reaching out for work. After a year of part time, I was able to go full time in 2020. While the pandemic hit many businesses hard, mine flourished because everyone was even more reliant on digital marketing and content creation.

It worked out better than I thought honestly.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My first stop anywhere will almost always be caffeine. As a huge coffee person, I will stop at the best coffee shop in Colorado; The Pour House. My wife and I are huge coffee snobs, and actually got married in this coffee shop. On top of the great in house roasts, and lovely staff, it has a huge personal tie in for me.

Next up will be getting the mountain bikes out and heading over to Canon City, just 15 minutes away. We have over 70 miles of single track mountain bike trails and some of the most diverse landscapes!

Once we’ve gotten a great bike ride in, my next stop would be a breakfast burrito from another great coffee shop: The Bean Pedaler. While the coffee is good, the food is even better! In the summer months, they even have a bar open with a great selection of Colorado beers.

Downtowns are my favorite parts of any city, and we have some great buildings and businesses all around. So after the good food, we’d hit the town and window shop. Saying hi to the amazing business owners who I’ve come to call friends.

To end the trip, I would visit two key places. The first would be the Emergent Campus in Florence, Colorado. This is an over 100 year old high school that has been transformed into commercial office space, and business incubator. It has co-working available, incredible community, and an invigorating atmosphere.

The second place I would head would be into the mountains around Florence for a great hiking experience at the Florence Mountain park!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to all of the incredible people at Fremont Economic Development Corp on creating a community that can sustain a variety of tech businesses. Without the work of Brad Rowland, Rob Brown, Diana Armstrong and many others, my life and countless others would have been very different.
