We had the good fortune of connecting with Sally Ogilby and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sally, what is the most important factor behind your success?
At BLOCK21 Fitness, we’re not about being perfect. Dancing in front of others can be quite intimidating. During classes, we encourage people to let go of their expectations, to remember that no one cares what you look like, and to not be afraid to mess up. This attitude has proven to be one of our most important skills, especially when the COVID pandemic hit, and we were notified that we had to close the doors to our studio. In just 5 hours after announcing our closure, we rolled out of first virtual class by utilizing this approach. It wasn’t the best quality and we’ve had many technical issues since then, but to be able to just “put it out there” knowing that it was imperfect allowed us to move forward and learn the next step without sweating the details.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
BLOCK21 Fitness is a cardio dance workout, based out of Denver, CO, combining hip-hop cardio and interval training. I started teaching classes out of a dance studio 4 years ago and opened the first studio location in 2019. Every step of the journey has had many stressors and disappointments, most of them unforeseen. In persevering through the various challenges of starting a business, building a community, opening a brick-and-mortar location, and surviving a global pandemic, I’ve gained confidence in my ability to make decisions and to continue moving forward in the tough moments.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Denver is such a good city to explore on a bike. All of the neighborhoods have their own vibe to them, so you need to cover some serious ground. I’d start the ride at Union Station (too early for Salted Oreo Little Man ice cream?!) and head North through RiNo to check out the street art. From there, head East through Five Points, Whittier, and City Park. Denver is unique in that it is a residential city and there are single family houses right in Downtown Denver, which gives it a community feel. I’d pick up some Thai food along the way and bike to Cheeseman Park for a picnic. Not only is it a beautiful place to eat, but you can feel the energy of the city surrounded by all the excitement of Capitol Hill.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We wouldn’t be around without our tireless instructors! They are the lifeline of our company and spread the BLOCK21 magic to every person that walks through our doors (even virtually!) I am so grateful to have them alongside me throughout this journey.
