We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Hewitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, why did you pursue a creative career?
Photography adds so much value to our lives – by recording special events, people, and places, while also helping us learn and grow as people. It allows you to share your life and experiences in meaningful ways, and it allows you to engage and have fun with other people.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Becoming a photographer gave me an entirely new perspective on everyday life.

You can use photography to turn almost anything you find beautiful into a work of art. You can use your photographic skills to creatively capture an array of subjects that ranges from children’s emotions to family gatherings.

Photography can allow you to express yourself, share your perspective and tell a story through your creative approach.

Growing up I’ve always been more on the artistic side, having drawn regularly from a very early age. I think once I realized the potentional that photography has, there was no turning back. It’s now so engrained in my pysche that there aren’t many waking moments I’m not thinking about it.

Street photography has always been a favorite of mine. I really started shooting on an IPhone and picked up a Nikon DSLR. From that point on, I always had a camera with me. I love taking shots of people doing things in their natural settings, not being posed.

There will be moments which we want to share with people who are not beside us at that moment.

There will be moments where we want to look back and remember, the mood and the feel we were in at a certain location.

I want to create such moments and freeze them in time. Looking back at some pictures I took make me remember exactly what I was doing and what my mind set was at that time.

All I can say is never stop shooting. The worst picture is the one you didn’t take.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to see the city overlooking the Griffith Observatory or a museum trip in DTLA at the Broad. Hollywood Boulevard would be a great place to sightsee as well as see the stars. Grand Central Market would be a good place to grab food. Union Station is in the heart of downtown and can take a quick train ride to San Diego. Beaches like Santa Monica and Venice beach are 30 minutes away from downtown.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I attribute a lot of my independence and creative success to my best friend Jessi. She has always been there for me when no one else seemed to when I needed support the most. She has always had creative pursuits and ambitions that really motivated me and even pushed me to become more successful and a better me.
