Meet Sara Lange | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Lange and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sara, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I knew from a very young age that I didn’t want a “regular” job. A 9-5 as they call it. I knew I wasn’t meant to live that lifestyle. Even though so many people told me that I would never make a lot of money being a photographer and that I would need a second job. Well thankfully I squashed both of those myths. Yes, it took time, A LOT of hard work, many hours of feeling alone and isolated from society. But I would never change it for anything. I have worked many other jobs such as Chick Fil A, Sam’s Club, Costco, Autozone and a few others. When I worked at these places my heart felt so unfulfilled and lost. Which also made me have zero motivation towards my own business which got no attention while working at these other places. But when I had my second child I decided to make the leap and quit those other jobs and focus on my business. It was scary at first but looking back now I am proud that I made that huge leap. Now 3 years later I work full time from home as a photographer. I am very proud of this title and I often acknowledge how lucky I am to be living my dream.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from many other photographers is that I have dreamed of this career path since a young child. Most of the photographers I have met picked up photography as a hobby while they were exploring another career path. Which they then had to learn on their own as an adult. I have MANY years of experience with photography all the way back to about 13 years old using a film camera then 3 years in high school, 3.5 years in college and then special education from online courses. Again I am so proud of myself for sticking to it and knowing that one day it would all come together like in my vision. Not listening to those who told me it wouldn’t work or that I wouldn’t make money. While I overcame many challenges, I never realized truly how challenging owning your own business actually was. No one really prepared me for that. There are so many things I had to learn on my own after hitting a problem. Thankfully I have met some really kind and helpful people and groups who are there to support. I would have been very lost without those tools. I want people to know how hard I worked to follow my dream. And even though there will be easy days, there will always be hard days. You can’t let those hard days define you or your success as a business owner. Always trust your instinct. The outside world will ALWAYS have an opinion. But that doesn’t have to be true for you and your story.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in Colorado my whole life has shown me that we have some amazing places here to visit! Anyone who comes from out of state to visit, I like taking them to a few important and special spots.
First I always go to downtown Denver. Downtown Denver has so many interesting aspects about it. I personally LOVE some of the neighborhoods you can find with big beautiful architecture. It’s cool seeing all the different styles people like. Next I would take them to some of the delicious restaurants we have here in Denver. My family has a few places we like going often. And lastly in Denver, I would recommend visiting the art district. Especially during the festival they host each year. My husband and I take the kids each year. We love seeing the graffiti art and different paintings people produce.
Aside from Denver, I personally LOVE Red Rocks Amphitheater. It’s such a unique and scenic venue there’s not a lot of other places that compare to it. My husband and I love going to concerts here. We have taken a few friends who have never been and they explain it as life changing.
There are so many places I would want to show someone visiting Colorado. But I think if I had to choose, I would take them into the mountains. We have SO many fun and unique mountain towns to explore. My favorites are Manitou Springs, Idaho Springs, Georgetown and of course Estates Park. Not only are these adorable mountain towns beautiful but the shopping and food is so amazing it’s not quite like being in Denver. It’s something everyone needs to experience at least once! I am so happy I live in such a fun and unique place! Colorado will forever be my home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are SO many people that I could mention to recognize my success. My parents would probably be the first on that list. They have always supported my decision to become a photographer. I took 3 years in high school which is where I fell in love with it. Ever since then my dad helped me get into an art college which I know would probably not have been his choice for me but he never questioned it or tried to sway me in another direction. Not only that but my parents bought me all the equipment I needed to start my own business. I am very grateful for everything they have done for me as far as me pursuing photography. The next person I would recognize would be my husband. Ever since I met him he has done nothing but support me and help me with whatever I need. He spends much of his time helping me put together sets and make crafts I use for photoshoots. He tells me all the time how proud of me he is for pursuing my dream and not giving into a 9-5 job.
