We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Murphy & Jennie Ngo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara & Jennie, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
We work now more than ever before (and we love it!). Being passionate about the business we’ve built has played a huge part in how we feel about work-life balance. Yes, we work long hours and don’t take a lot of days off, but we also enjoy what we’re doing and while growing our business we’ve also grown our friendship. Long hours in the kitchen and at events are actually really fun for us and so we get to combine our work & social lives into one. We’re lucky to have supportive spouses & family members who are understanding of our crazy schedules and who always show up to support us in any way they can.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We love expressing our creativity through baking craft cookies. Prior to opening The Flour Shop, baking & cooking were an outlet that we each utilized to step away from the stresses of everyday life and put our creative energy into something that we loved to do. We love the opportunity each month to come up with a special “Cookie of the Month”. This is where we get to experiment with new flavors or ideas and it helps keep our creative juices flowing. The first cookie we ever created together was the Lemon Lavender Cookie. This has always been one of our top sellers and we consider it our pride and joy, as it launched our business and inspired us to become craft cookie couriers. Building our business hasn’t been easy but we’re so grateful to be part of such an amazing community of small businesses in Denver. We’ve felt so supported and uplifted by many small business owners that we’ve connected with who have helped us to overcome some of the challenges that come with being a business owner.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A few of our top fav spots in the Denver/metro area include: For coffee: Generous Coffee For brunch: Sassafras or Denver Biscuit Company For lunch: Leven or Parsley For fun: Coors Field for Rockies games or Wash Park for Sunday Funday For drinks: Improper City or Factotum Brewhouse For live music: Kenny Lee Young (performs at lots of local spots!)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would love to shout out The Rose Andom Center. We realized our shared dream of owning a bakery while on a leadership retreat for the Rose Andom Center’s Young Professionals Council. The RAC played a huge part in our growth as individuals and professionals and they do amazing and critical work to support domestic violence survivors in Denver.
