We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, why did you pursue a creative career?
I enjoy the process of creating something with my hands. I also enjoy collaborating with others and being part of something bigger than myself, such as with cosplay groups. The ability to make something from nothing is an ability I cherish, and the process itself is cathartic as I work through the feelings of the normal workday (I also work as a preschool teacher) and create my next big piece.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a cosplayer who guests and competes at conventions in Colorado and Alabama, I pride myself on my primary working medium: yarn. In cosplay, there are potentially a few hundred of us yarn-based cosplayers, and even fewer who use it as the primary medium. I started incorporating yarn elements in 2017 as a Beginner in the cosplay competition sphere, and I am now a Masters level cosplayer. It has had its challenges, such as figuring out how to piece entire outfits and even a ballgown out of yarn, but I wouldn’t have as much experience as I have today without those challenges. My dream is simple–to elevate yarn in the cosplay competition sphere to the highest degree possible. While my primary goal is to inspire other people to find ways to utilize their niche mediums (yarn, Perler beads, LEGOs, etc.) and pursue their passions in the cosplay world, should they want to.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my friends visit from Alabama I love looking up local places for us to eat, though none specifically come to mind. I enjoy taking them down to Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods to check out the beautiful scenery. I also love taking friends up to Estes Park and the Stanley Hotel so that they get the “tourist” experience. Depending on my friend’s interests, I may recommend the Botanical Gardens or the Butterfly Pavillion, Maybe the Denver Zoo or the Aquarium if they enjoy seeing animals. I just love showing my friends around my new home state (moved here five and a half years ago) and finding new places to eat and hang out at along the way.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I competed in a cosplay contest in 2021, I met and befriended about a dozen other people in the contest, cosplay, and content creation sphere. We started a group chat before the contest to encourage each other and help one another succeed in our projects. Afterward, we continued to be friends and now meet monthly to craft together and help our friends complete their respective projects. Throughout this friendship we have encouraged and helped each other, and we have walked through the good and bad of being creators together. We call ourselves the Cosplay Cool Cats Club, as cheesy as it sounds. I also have to shoutout my partner, Cynthia Mosborg, for supporting me in every venture and journey I take, no matter how harebrained the ideas sound. She has been my rock and my biggest supporter (9 years last month!), and I would not be where I am without her.
