We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Scheer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, is there something you believe many others might not?
“If you do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” For one, work isn’t a bad thing. Work is how we add to the culture we live in, it’s a way we can use our talents, give value and feel valued. For another, any work–an exchange of energy and time, even if its the thing you love the most, if you connect the need for income to it there will probably be difficulties that come with it. That’s okay! That’s natural. Going into your dream job, opening your own business, etc is going to be a lot of work, but if you go into it with the mindset that you’re lucky to get to do the hard work along with what you love, I think you’ll be happier overall.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I recently opened Curio: a shop and creative space, with my friend, Joslyn. I previously owned a ceramic business and she owned a clothing store. One evening after close in her shop, we were confiding in each other over the difficulties of running our business alone, when we connected on a vision for concept shop and partnership. We quickly found a beautiful space with big windows, arches and the potential to really bring something beautiful to our community.
Curio runs as a shop that brings in beautiful small, ethical brands, artists and local makers. We host creative workshops and events and bring in other local experts for the community to learn from. This has been one of the best ways to connect with our city and really foster some beautiful relationships. Living in a time where things have shifted to being mainly online, we wanted to offer a special and welcoming physical space to experience exceptional products from brands as well as have reasons to gather together and meet new people.
Like my previous business, I continue to make ceramics from my garage studio and I create Curio’s ceramic collections as well as other in-house goods. I believe one of my strengths is my desire to create in as many mediums as possible. I’m currently working in ceramics, candle making, metal jewelry and illustration.
I’m also incredibly passionate about people having the freedom and encouragement to make art. I think often children that could “draw realistically” were encouraged to be artists and child that couldn’t weren’t encouraged in the same way. It hurts my heart the amount of times I’ve heard adults say “I can’t even draw a stick person” in relation to themselves and making art. Art is more than drawing and it’s so much more than being “good” at it. Art is about the process, art is finding peace in working with your hands, art is about overcoming limiting beliefs and expectations. Being a creative isn’t only for an elite group, creativity is in everyone, creating is FOR everyone. If you want to be an artist, call yourself an artist. Make art, be an artist. All that to say, having creative workshops is a huge part of what we do at Curio and why I’m so proud of what we’ve built for our community.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give my appreciation to my best friend and husband, Michael, for consistently encouraging me in art, business, the big picture and everything in between.
Shoutout to my family and in-laws for encouraging me through every creative project and business venture.
And to my incredibly talented business partner and friend, Joslyn. She’s the brilliance behind the beautiful curation and day-to-day flow of our business, Curio. She puts endless energy and love into our little shop and creative space.
