Meet Scott Miller | Jiu-jitsu and grappling coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to create a unique culture and environment of my own. A different approach to teaching and learning Martial Arts. A place that was friendly yet had gritty hard training. A place where the student has some creative license on what they practice and how. A place where injury prevention and sustainability are key. And a place where everyone is friendly and helpful.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I specialize in Jiu-jitsu. A grappling art for self defense. I study all Martial Arts and really try to create the best version for whatever task my students or myself is trying to accomplish. I have almost 30 years of experience starting with wrestling. I think what sets me apart from others is my obsession, my mentors, and perspective. I borrow and try all sorts of teaching and training methods. I’m always open minded to trying new things and rely on my students for feedback.
I’m most proud of being able to teach from day one kids to the highest level of the UFC. I’ve taught for 15 years all over the country and world. And all levels from 4 to 70 years old. From the best athletes in the world to those who have handicaps.
It’s been a long road to be able to teach and do what I love for a living. It’s been about 5 years ago when I “burned the boats” and quit my cushy corporate job. It’s a physically and mentally demanding job. It’s also very rewarding and I love sharing my knowledge and passion. Any challenges I’ve had I just kept working hard and being a good student. There’s no secret to success I believe. It’s just hard work and working smart.
I strive to have consistency in my classes and culture. You can expect a good energy, a well thought out plan, and a good workout in my classes. The culture is very friendly and everyone is helping each other become the best version of themselves.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love where I live and have my business. Evergreen is a beautiful place with some great people and businesses. I’d take them to Evergreen lake to do some fishing or stand up paddle board. And if it’s the winter it would be some ice fishing or ice skating. There’s some great hiking and biking in the area too. I’d take them to one of my favorite hikes and do some cliff jumping. Or one of my favorite mountain bike trails. There’s some great restaurants in the area as well. Black hat cattle company is a great steakhouse with an old western vibe. Switchback smokehouse has some of the best Barbecue I’ve ever had. Idaho Springs is a short drive away and has some great restaurants and bars as well.
Probably cap off the week with some off roading and shooting in the woods. A real mountain experience!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have lots of people to thank and that I’ve learned from. First off would be my brother who taught me how to wrestle at a very young starting my passion of martial arts. Secondly, would be Nick Kapande who has helped me learn so much about business and sales. Lastly, is Neil Melanson who has been the best coach I’ve ever had and met. A true master at what he does.
