We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Fay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
RailRiders helps the world by providing unique recreation experiences that often times end up saving bits of railroad that would otherwise be torn up. Our products are also used for many humanitarian purposes, and connect many small communities in Africa and South America that would otherwise be impossible to connect had it not been for the rails
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Strangely enough, hospitality management has really enabled me to put a unique spin on this business, and manage it in a great fashion. Although I don’t deal with many of the end users and tourists directly, being better able to understand the sector of business that my customers are in has set me up for success. The road has had a lot of ups and downs, but having this background has help me to turn the downs into ups more easily.
At the end of the day, I’d like folks to know that Rail Riders is a small brand, whose manufacturing is focused entirely in the United States. We believe in partnering with other small businesses to get products made to keep other small businesses in business, while providing the best possible product that we can.
I am very proud of being able to take the concept of railriding and railbike-based tourism from a very small niche of less than 10 locations in the United States to a worldwide recreational phenomenon.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Seeing as I live in one of the best tourist destinations in the United States, that is a hard question. We have so many amazing things to see, and do here in Colorado that it’s hard to narrow it down to just one. Likely the trip would involve a visit to the Glenwood Hot Springs, pool, a trip through the royal gorge, and if time permits a visit to Ouray.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could not have gotten as far as I have had it not been for the help of my family and friends. Special shout out to Hank, Troy, Laura, Eriks and Aldis for all of the late night phone calls and ideas being bounced off of each other’s heads. Being the tip of the spear in a strange new industry can be very stressful but with the right folks around you, you’ve got all the help in the world.
Also, the leader of my entrepreneurship classes in college Robert Cartelli deserves a special. Thank you. It is always great to learn from somebody who has been down a similar Road in the past.
