We had the good fortune of connecting with Sebastian Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sebastian, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I still feel that I am a tattoo artist who needs a lot of experience, no matter that it has been 12 years since I grabbed my first machine every day there are things to learn, new techniques, new ways of painting, new work materials and many more things. But getting to the point about what I want my legacy to be I feel that it would be to make people understand both consumers and people who join to be tattoo artists is that they do not think that the tattoo is a business just to make money, it is obvious that all of us who tattoo also intend to Live from this and maintain our homes and pay bills, but I feel that the tattoo has become with a very monetary approach when in reality we have forgotten that being a tattoo artist is being a craftsman where you learn to draw and take the time to make incredible designs, you learn to weld your own needles, you learn to assemble your machines and experiment with them, prepare your own pigment mixtures and also new injection techniques to perform good work on the skin.
I want that even though now everything is done and you can buy it easily I would like to continue maintaining that legacy of the tattoo tradition for the future.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Colombian tattoo artist, I started in Bogotá 12 years ago, the classic tattoo style always caught my attention, so I decided to focus on making traditional style tattoos. I did not have the opportunity to finish my studies as a plastic artist for economic reasons, but I tried to form my education with some intermediate courses and studies on my own in research. I still continue to study non-stop because this job never stops teaching you new things, I want to become a disciplined tattoo with excellence and more precise to execute my tattoo pieces. Starting to tattoo was not so easy for me, speaking of my experience, gaining people’s trust to get tattooed is something complicated. In my country there is no walk-in like here in the United States, in Colombia you have to be really very good for people to believe in your work, so you have to work twice as hard and study twice as much to get a job. It took me many years to make clients who will trust my work but now that I have achieved it a large part of my clients have become my friends and that is very rewarding. I think that at the end of all that is the tattoo, that your clients always come back to greet you, give you a hug and to continue decorating their body in an appropriate and incredible way
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Actually I have always been a lover of visiting restaurants that offer me incredible food so that would be my first recommendation, I have too many favorite restaurants to visit. The second thing would be to visit a good museum or art exhibition or I would take you to some nature reserve or an outdoor place where you can appreciate the beauty of the area. I am a lover of theater and comedy so of course I would take you to a theater or comedy session and because to see an incredible movie. and finally to share time at my workplace and get a good tattoo for your return home!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I actually feel that I have to dedicate this to several people, firstly to my parents for supporting me and believing in me and above all patience, they believed in me from the beginning and I think that is important in anything you do the support and more of your parents, in the second part to my uncle who is a great tattoo artist with many years of experience and he was the one who helped me start in this tattoo thing. and in the third part to all the tattoo artists who take this job seriously and make the tattoo continue to advance day after day
