Meet Sheala Dawn Henke | Author and Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheala Dawn Henke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sheala Dawn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe risk is a critical aspect of growth and how we arrive at who we are in our lives. From my experience, the biggest risks seem to go hand in hand with change. But, facing change by having to confront a challenging choice out of our comfort zone is the best pathway toward growth. Something I’ve learned about risk in the recent years is that very little is under my control and even with the best laid plans, life’s little (or big) disruptions are opportunities to learn to let go and trust in the risk itself to guide you.
More recently in my life, I’ve chosen to make a significant pivot in my career path. After 22 years in my career teaching home, having built many close networks, while also blending in a productive writing career, I was presented with an opportunity to try something new. As I embarked on a path that began in January 2019, it was in February 2019 that I took the first steps toward change and embraced risk to move away from the school I had called home for over two decades. Noting the timeline, this was right before what would go down in history as one of the most momentous global changes in my lifetime. As the events shaped into a world-wide pandemic and a complete paradigm shift in the education system, I only knew that BIG change was on the horizon. I chose to cast my fate out into the unknown. I had virtually thrown my career prospects to the wind, and I had no idea where I might land. Fortunately, the simple fact that I was able to pull my roots at such a time to embrace the unknown lead to an incredibly opportunity. One that aligned with my long-range target to expand my teaching career. I began teaching for the ‘one-year-only’ virtual school over the 2020-21 school year, learning critical new skills that I now apply three years later in my current position at a hybrid school for blended-learning. At this point in the venture, I have achieved the work/life balance I was looking for, and I continue to be challenged every day with new learning.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Writing is a source of life’s breath for me. It is a friend, a therapist, and a home where I find pieces and parcels of myself that help me feel more connected with the outside world.
I’ve recently embarked on a new writing adventure in publication with the Kindle Vella experience and my recent work of Speculative Fiction, Five On the Vine. Vella is an episodic platform, where stories are shared in a serialized format and authors publish content in episodes. Readers consume that content one episode at a time. The Vella community has served as a bridge, helping to reshape the industry and open doors for writers whose stories deserve to be seen and recognized. This new grassroots format of story development is a wonderful way I can share and connect with readers.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Best Day Ever!
Bring along a few friends or make it a cello adventure by starting your day with a dip in the Horsetooth Reservoir on a paddleboard and a few friends. After some time paddling around the North Bay coves and a picnic lunch on the water, head to the Hillside Vineyard only 5 min. from shore where you can enjoy a flight of wine, wine slushies, or a rare Blending Tour (to make your own wine). It is a beautiful open space next to a local vineyard over the hill toward the quaint country town of Belview off Bingham Hill Road.
End the evening with a sunset beverage and/or appetizers at the Sunset Rooftop Lounge Elizabeth Hotel back in Old Town (all walking distance). Check the time for sunset and watch the sun go down on the Rocky Mountain Range of North Fort Collins.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to make a shout-out to the incredible team at Poudre Global Academy for taking me under their wings and showing me a path toward expanding and prolonging my love of teaching.I would also like to pay tribute to Northern Colorado Writers and the Writing Heights Community who have given me a source of support over the past fifteen years of my writing career.
