We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheila Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sheila, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My business supports the community by educating and equipping parents with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively advocate for their children and build a solid academic foundation at home. When parents gain the necessary skills to support their children, it creates a better relationship with the schools, which helps a child have better self-confidence and have a deeper desire to learn.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have titled myself the “Parent Partner” because I am in the business of partnering with parents to equip and empower them with the tools and resources to advocate for their children and build a solid educational foundation at home. My purpose for doing this work is to bridge the gap and build a better relationship between parents and schools. What sets me apart is that my work is also niche down to meet the needs of parents of Black and Brown Boys. Working with parents of Black and Brown Boys is vital to ensure our sons receive equitable treatment and a solid literacy foundation. This will help to close the literacy gap and dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline.
It has not been an easy journey as an Author and Eduprenuer. Marketing and creating systems have been the most challenging part of my journey. To overcome these challenges, I utilized a business coach to help develop a marketing plan and other tools that make owning a business a little easier to maintain. I’ve learned to ask for help, and accepting helps me streamline systems to make my business more fluid and easier to maintain. Most importantly, I’ve learned patience and perseverance, never giving up when times got challenging or frustrating.
I want the world to know that my work as an author brings me so much joy! Creating books and services for families, especially black and brown boys, brings me so much joy. My work is not a job, but I call it my “Occupassion” because I am doing something that makes my heart happy and proud.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting my area, I would take them to our local theme park to experience the thrills, adventures, and concerts held there. We would purchase a two-day ticket to enjoy the water slides for one whole day, and on the second day, we would enjoy rides and shows. I would take them to the downtown area to visit the boutiques and specialty shops. Downtown also has some fantastic restaurants for lunch or dinner, and if it’s a weekend, we might even catch a concert around the square.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is to my deceased mother, who instilled in me a love of reading and learning. Although she worked the night shift as an LPN, she ensured that my siblings and I did well in school. She was an active and engaged parent who loved to read and was also deeply involved in making a difference in her community. I also want to thank my husband, Erick Thomas, for being my biggest fan! No matter what endeavor I decide to move into, he has always encouraged me and prayed for my success.
