We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Lavery and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shelby, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I think it was just natural for me to gravitate toward a creative career. All throughout high school and college, I was involved in live theatre, which taught me a lot about how you can make creativity kinda your own thing. I have always been drawn to other creative people too, so I kind of created this environment for myself that encourages self-expression and creativity. I honestly couldn’t ever see myself in a “non-creative” career because I believe as humans we are all so innately creative and that deserves to be shared!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been a freelance social media manager and content creator for almost two years now, and I think the thing I’m most proud of is establishing my business and leaping into this full-time. Before going full-time, I was working around 20 hours a week as a barista and although I didn’t mind the job, I started noticing how it was affecting my energy, which made it harder to give my all to my business. So, even though I was terrified to make this jump, I’m much happier now that I did. I couldn’t have gotten to where I am today without all of the wonderful people I’ve met along the way. There have been many challenges I’ve faced in my business, but ultimately I’m grateful for them because I’ve learned invaluable lessons I’ll take with me for the rest of my life. The single most important decision I made that got me to where I am today is taking a chance on myself. For a really long time, I didn’t believe that I was worthy of the success I saw other people achieving but once I decided that I was worthy enough to take a chance on myself that’s when the game changed for me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, we would go to Red Rocks for a concert (when concerts are a thing again of course)! A few other spots we’d hit are Chautauqua Park in Boulder for hike, Hopdoddy Burger Bar at Union Station, and maybe take a drive up to Estes Park and explore the haunted floors of the Stanley Hotel. We’d definitely take a drive down to Steamboat Springs to visit the Strawberry Hot Springs, especially since I’ve never been and it seems amazing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shoutout to Kinsey Streib, my previous business coach! Kinsey is the founder + head honcho at her biz, Feel Good Social, and she has truly helped me get to where I am today. She helped me to really hone in on what I want my business to look like and how I can create that within the life I want to live. She’s seriously one of the smartest, funniest, and loving people I’ve ever met and I’m so glad I have her in my corner!
